confusion about nuggets=ingot value

so in the beginning I melted tiny nuggets, and it turned into a massive nice ingot. Now I am using the biggest nuggets from the bottom of the pit, and the ingots are seemingly the same size. how is value set on the ingot? am I wasting my gold by filling the crucible AAAAAALL up before melting it all into one ingot? how does this work?

How many Gold / Iron nuggets can I fit in one bar?
- Unlimited, although the visual size will stop increasing after a certain point.

You can always use the saw over and over til you get a bazzilion tiny ingots. xD
