The ideal would be a joystick for movement and a mouse for aiming, but it's hard to get a hold of a one handed controller that is compatible with PC.
Since I must decide between more precise movement or more precise aiming, I will prioritise more precise movement every time due to the tactics and combat tendencies that I have developed.
What you're actually doing is deciding between smooth movement with a higher level of control and janky aiming versus quick, precise movement and aiming that may not be as comfortable.
In response to your stance on utilising the mouse to overcome the lack of precision on the keyboard's movement, I agree but the opposite is also true, I actually end up utilizing the additional movement precision from the joystick when moving to overcome the disadvantages of using a joystick for aiming, in the same way as you described utilising the precision of the mouse to fine-tune movement with a keyboard.
Please instead put in the work to make navigating the menus with the dpad or left thumbstick as general UX wisdom would dictate, i.e pressing up and down navigates up and down an option in the menu, instead of as it is currently that you have to navigate the 'controller mouse pointer' over your desired menu option and press A.
Agreed, a mouse cursor controlled with a joystick is a nightmare at best.
I use 3 of those snap-on thumbstick extenders on my right stick for aiming in all of the games I use controllers for, and I don't feel handicapped by not using a mouse to aim at all. In this game I chain weakpoint strikes back to back to back all the time. I imagine doing that with a mouse is fine too, just different.
It just comes down to personal taste and what feels best to you personally.
Also I agree that the joystick cursor needs work. At the very least there needs to be a slight deadzone to stop the drifting while trying to select stuff on the menus.
