Tanimura's fighting style is terrible.
It is useless against grabs that sometimes occur continuously.
It is useless against groups of enemies.
The fighting style is almost impossible to get used to.

Your thoughts?

For the most part I liked his style, but that's probably because I prefer the faster styles in the Yakuza games. I did find it bad in a couple of spots when you fight the Korean? cop for training and the boss battle at the end when you get stuck in the massive group, I got stabbed a lot during that one.

All I will say is wait until you get to the last playable character in Yakuza 5. You will wish for Tanimura to come back. He is the true embodiment of useless. Tanimura at least has his absolutely busted parry that can make even groups of enemies not touch you.
Akiyama > Kiryu > Tanimura > Saejima

I think we were spoiled with Akiyama first that when we got to both Saejima and Tanimura we saw how different the styles are.

But Tanimura's "essence of arresting" is pretty OP. i did that to a tough enemy when they had a lot of health left and it was an insta-win for me.

I like Saejima the best tbh, it's so satisfying to land a fully charged hit, can't get enough of this.
Akiyama and Tanimura are just fine, i guess. Using them was not particularly enjoying or hard.

I hated it when I accidentally wasted that move on somebody who was a couple of punches away from being out of the fight.

Ya kidding? Tanimura is great. I loved his grapples and how many things you could do with them. Also heat actions from any finisher. He was really fun to play as. The problem is that they didn't design his encounters well, he meets quite a lot of enemies who you can't grab and that's a bummer. I'm sad we won't play as him anymore.

Saejima really sucked at the beginning, because he needs some upgrades to be viable (the ones with hyper armour) and he gets into toughest fights in the game right away, when you have nothing yet. If you level him a bit - he becomes a beast and the easiest character to play (aside from Kiryu). Amon never stood a chance.

Akiyama was a breath of fresh air after 3 and seemed really good at the beginning, but at max level he's quite limited compared to the others. Sure, fast kicks are fun, but not when they are the only means of attack.

Kiryu... He's just a beast in 4. Everything from 3, but with normal enemy AI and more moves on top of that. Every boss fight seems like a punishment to the opponent who never stood a chance.

I agree about Akiyama being super limited. Spamming the light attack button is not fun. Although I think that Saejima is even more boring/limited, just much stronger.

Kiryu is always a beast, but in 4 even more so, since the whole game is laughably easy compared to some others, especially 3. Well, except for that one Saejima prison break segment. Feels like the enemy difficulty was scaled down to fit characters like Akiyama, but even he can just make mincemeat out of everyone later on. Bosses die in 10-20 seconds...also the AI sometimes never does anything. Jo Amon in Y4 literally doesn't do anything half the time (on Hard and Legend) until he is low on HP, it's really weird.
his basic combo is pretty much impossible for the AI to get out of once he starts. So it's kind of OP as long as you can get to the side or behind them. He's nowhere near the level of Shinada bad in terms of hand to hand. At least he's got 3 dozen easy to pull off heat actions. I also found the single punch to finsher the most powerful one since if it lands it will put someone in a unique falling animation and they stay down for a long while. So it's good for crowd control. Given how easy it is for him to build up heat, his entire style relies on just spamming the crap out of heat actions.

He has powerfull grab heat moves, and also its nice to throw enemies at walls with parry.
Sounds like a personal problem. There's nothing wrong with Tanimura apart from the fact that this is not Tanimura and the only way to get the real Tanimura is by playing the PS3 version or modding the real actor back in :)

Tanimura's style revolves around heat actions get combo ender heat actions and get the upgraded though heavy use and Tanimura becomes really good.

I know this is old but I came to say how amazing his fighting style is. I feel like he recovers heat very quickly and can use a bunch of heat moves with ease; love those parries. I found Saejima too slow for my taste. Akiyama was awesome! Haven't played Kiryu but I know he beast

saejima's is worse, the need to hold down the attack button constantly makes it even worse than kiryu beast style from 0, sure it decent against a large group but pretty bad

Bro there is so way you guys think saejima's style is rock bottom... bro his style has SUPER ARMOR AND HEAVY DAMAGE, ALONG WITH THE FACT THAT HE HAS LITERALLY SO MUCH HEALTH AND HIS HEAT ACTIONS ARE SUPER EASY TO PULL OFF. nah theres no way.

I'm considering skipping the rest of this game altogether because this guy is so terrible. For the record, I hated Beast mode in 0, too, and only leveled it up to get the shared health. But now I'm stuck with it in this one? Blech.

I think you guys are high. Tanimura is completely busted with his parry with iframes and his grab moves. He can feel underwhelming at first but once you get a few skills he becomes a powerhouse.
All 4 characters are great to play it's just that you have to adapt to each of their styles. People complain about Saejima while he's literally a walking tank...
