Can't find equipment

Thanks for any help on this and I'm sure it's been addressed somewhere but I can't see it.
When my little people make axes etc, I am not sure where they are going. Each of my people has their own tool storage in their bedroom and they all still kick stones and trees even after I've got them to make a few tools, I've looked on the ground, in the tool storages, in the inventories, etc but I can't figure out where these tools are going.
Can someone please tell me where they are supposed to go so I can check and look for them? Thanks!

In the upper left-hand corner of the display is an equipment icon - it looks like a breastplate. If you click on it, you'll see the stuff you've made.

To assign tools to settlers, left-click on their tool storage rack, and again on the "select" button. Then you can choose a tool to put into the rack. If the settler that owns the rack does not equip it right away, you can right click on the tool rack (with the settler selected) and instruct them to equip it.
