Do not hesitate to craft several food storage.
Do not count on apple, unless for late game recipes.
Make sure at least one of your villager is programed to be a 3 stars farmer to be sure he will prioritise the farm work.
Check you didn't set your villager to eat extra rations (the % under their portrait).
use 1 of your villager as scholar to study the crystal and unlock different technolgy, with the woodcraft tech you can craft a watering can that will increase how many food you'll get from each plant.
I started the game with a 6x7 tomato square then later I added a 6x7 potate square and my 6 villagers never run out of food. And I use lot of vegetables to craft cooked meals.
I think you should consider at least a 6x6 field of tomatoes and a 6x6 of potatoes.
You can never really have too much food - if you do, you can give them extra rations or use it for bribing the goblins.
In the first year, I like to have 30xfood for each Foundy in the village to get through winter and into Spring until your first harvest. You can get by with less, but its nice to have a small buffer :)
Thanks!
*I do have the waterbucket technology. It probably doubles farming productivity.
1 cooked meal requires 2 raw vegetables, but give more satiety and happyness.
The waterbucket doesn't double production, but allow you to reach the maximum production; clic on any plantation tile and you'll see something like "will produce 1-4 tomato".
