The game lets you build in 3d, but can only show one floor at a time. There is a small up and down arrow on the top left of the bottom bar....right above the "wardrobe" button that you click to build things.
It seems quite possible that you are trying to build a bed while on a floor that doesn't exist yet.....like you are accidentally on the second floor and trying to build the bed in mid air.
The number in between the arrow keys should be showing "0" for ground floor. Click down until it shows 0 (or you can use the keyboard shortcuts, default R to go up a floor and F to go down). You should now be able to place a bedROLL.
To place a bed, you'll need to research furniture (little laboratory bottle in the top right of the screen....you don't want to delay working on that too long...you can't plant crops until you research farming!), but from what you're saying, it sounds like you're in the very early section of the game, and it wants you to place a bedroll.
Note that once you place and build it, you'll need to select a colonist and right click on the bedroll to tell them to "own" it.
Yes is very early beginning of game. I will look at the floor number to be "0". Did not know that was a thing. Will let you know if it worked. Thanks
