Colonists stop working

I am sure this was asked and answered, but I can't find it anywhere. Anyway,, my people will be set as a Farmer, or a Forester, but will not do the job unless I tell them to. What is the point of giving them that job then?
Mind you I have yet to survive my second winter due to food issues, but that something else all together.

Have you designated an area for trees, rocks and iron to be worked? It's set to harvest only resources set by an area by default but you'll need to set the area yourself. Click on the Cog in the bottom left corner if this doesn't make any sense.

Yes, but I did with my foresters, but I am more worried about the farmer than anything.

Ok. Maybe a bit more detail will help. Could you explain what it is that your farmer is doing and not doing at the time that you feel that they aren't doing what you expect them to? Does that make sense?

Sure. I have a farm of roughly 7 long x 3 rows. There will be 4 or 5 of the plots that do not have plants in them at all and my farmer will be off mining or cutting down trees for example.

Ok, now I understand. I thought that they might be just standing there refusing to do anything (which might have been a bug). But in this case please read the following to better understand how this system works as well as a mod recommendation at the end (mentioned in the dev response) if you desire a more precise system. Hope this helps.

Just keep in mind that you don't have to give them more than 1 profession as you can still manually order them to do anything. If you 3 star Farming and don't star anything else then that should reduce the amount of time they try to do something else. It seems to work that way anyways. Best of luck.
