But that hit can crit (for crit chances) and you then deals critical damage instead.
But that crit can crit again (for ancestral strike chances) and you then deals ancestral strike damage instead.
If you have:
- a skill that normal deals 100 damages
- 20% crit chances and 200% crit damages
- 10% ancestral strike chances and 500% ancestral strike damages
Then:
- you have 80% (100% - 20%) chances to deal 100 damages (100% of 100)
- you have 18% (20% - 10% of 20%) chances to deal 200 damages (200% of 100)
- you have 2% (10% of 20%) chances to deal 500 damages (500% of 100)
Ancestral strike is a crit of a crit.
It does nothing else than replacing the damages of a hit that is already a crit.
And it can only happen on base damage effects of class skills.
BUT the ancestral tree brings ancestral skills (that are just extra skills, nothing to do with ancestral strikes) AND effects that are triggered by ancestral strikes.
The game only check if an ancestral strikes happens and then it will additionnaly trigger the effect.
To illustrate with something more classic, simply imagine an effect triggered each time you evade. The evade is still the same. But because you evade, something else, quite unrelated, happens.
It's the same but with ancestral strikes. You play normally and sometimes a crit of a crit will happen and additionnaly a fireball will be launched.
To me, they should be something different, right now there's no logic behind having two critical hits.
Sure there is. It forces you to build your critical chance as a precursor to building your ancestral chance.
I mean, if the goal is for it to rarely occur, having a critical strike chance of 10% with a 10% chance to trigger an ancestral strike is basically the same as having a critical strike chance of 9% and ancestral strike chance of 1% individually.
However, if ancestral strikes deal more damage and have the ability to trigger additional effects, critical strikes have no real value, so no one would really care about critical strike chance on gear or abilities otherwise.
The only way around this would be to change what ancestral strikes do or make it a prohibitively difficult stat to obtain.
