You could very well play it for 15-20 hours and have a good grasp of your class without unlocking absolutely every upgrade there is to find.
If you want to unlock and max out everything, then yes it gets grindy.
Even though I've worked on this game for years, I still find it fun grinding and unlocking my upgrades. It's part of the experience we want to offer after all.
That being said, it got faster since our Early Access release.
Some that can be overlooked (like improving pure stats in the tower, that is only for the more dedicated players) and some that can't (like improving affinity in the forge, a new grinding needed to reduce the old grinding - but when grinding it, you're also grinding some of the old grind).
One thing that would really help with grinding would be reducing the need for gold by reducing the prevalence of the blacksmith in a build.
