The Doubtful Sock legendary item

Just wondering if this item, The Doubtful Sock (Legendary), is considered a quest item or important to hold onto for later? I just completed the Mage Academy by beating the Evil Twins and when I came out of the tower the wizard gave me some dialog about finding the sock and gave it to me. It's "legendary" perk is that it tells you which house you would belong to in the mage academy (which changes every time you put it on). Is the item just a gift from the wizard to give the player their first legendary? Or is it important to hold onto for later perhaps as a quest item? I know this is sort of where the main story stops for now until the next update but I can't seem to find any information anywhere about this legendary. Any help would be appreciated.
