Does it get harder?

I'm legit running straight through the levels holding left click and it only seems to be getting easier as I find upgrades and level. Nothing is challenging me, I haven't been below half health. I keep telling myself once I get past the start it'll ramp, but it seems to be getting easier. Does the difficulty increase in the end game?

The story is basically always in normal mode which yes is braindead. When you do expeditions (infinite random maps) or the tower things ramp up.
