I think there should be a variant scale of randomness between the traits.
Like for example if you had a Red Kobold and Blue Kobold get together, well you'd naturally think their offspring would be purple as it would be 50% from both parents. However, humans aren't even a perfect 50 - 50 of their parents so some swing in that would be nice to see.
So basically they'd still roughly be purple but they could lean closer to a reddish purple or bluish purple and each child would be in that range rather then being a perfect 50 - 50 split. That way it adds variety, but its just close enough to know who the parents are lol.
