Can you change character color after spawning?

I've already played through the missions once and now mostly use the game as a sandbox to play around with cheats on, and the main thing that still causes some annoyance is having to repeat the /give command over and over until I get a decent color for whatever critter I'm spawning.

Can the color of spawned characters be influenced somehow? Or failing that, can you change a character's colors afterward?

Most color changing is done by getting new eggs from the shop and breeding.

There is a mod that adds in changing colors but it's iffy if you get it right without a lot of experimenting.
