War Mongrels

Finished the game and my verdict noone asked for
First, let me just say Commandos 2 Men Of Courage is a game pretty high up on my list of best games I've played, so: I was intrugued when I learned about War Mongrels. Bought it and spent the next 80 odd hours (yeah) to reach the end and here I am.

Story and characters: One of the best, most fleshed out stories I've come across, once you read between the lines and know a little bit about the real WW2. It's based on historical main events and the characters come across as believable in the game's setting. The way the game wraps up the story is really something I would enjoy in a movie as well. 10/10

Cutscenes: Stunning. What else can I say? The art style, the storytelling through the cutscenes, again a solid 10/10.

Gameplay: For the most part it follows the style of Commandos/Desperados, which I am a huge fan of. That part I would gladly replay later to find other ways through the missions. What I am less thrilled about were these action parts where the game went off to be more like the old Rambo/Commando/Airborne Ranger on my C64 way back in time. To me, these bits were just plain annoying and I did not enjoy those. Luckily those bits were in only a few chapters which otherwise provided good puzzles to solve, the way I prefer it. There are some issues that bothered me greatly like how finicky the pick up order is, how it is a pixel hunt at times. 7/10 here.

Bugs and glitches: Honestly, I didn't come across many that I am aware of, and none of them broke the game although I did get a crash to desktop at the beginning of a later chapter. 1 annoying graphical glitch that made its appearance in one mission, and 1 appearance in the next before vanishing completely. That glitch was like having a thick cloud cover over the map making it impossible to see anything other than pixelated tones of grey unless I zoomed way in or moved the camera a bit.

Thank you for your solid feedback! Would you like to add it as a review for War Mongrels? :)

Hey. Didn't think of it as more than some thoughts after completing it but if someone regard it as good enough for a review then I'm glad to hear it. Personally, I don't read reviews that much. As for me adding anything as anything, this old brain is not sure how to do that. I just had some thoughts and that was it.

Mostly agree, but the dialogue writing was quite poor and felt like an attempt at a schlocky Inglorious Basterds type tone which clashed with the attempted weighty emotional war drama of the animated cutscenes. Not to say you can't blend these, but you really need a much more skilled writer or writing team to pull that off, this felt like someone's first writing project.
