what makes this a remaster?
honest question is the only thing about this a graphical upgrade that looks like an rts from 15 years ago? what other improvements did they make? im hesitant to spend $25 when i can spend $7.50 when the only difference i can see is barely a graphical improvement.

This is what you get:

I can honestly say that Praetorians HD Remaster rendered the original game useless. After playing the Remaster, you can't go back to the original.

This is what you get:

  • Massive graphics improvements
  • Completely redesigned GUI
  • Built-in Multiplayer fully integrated to Steam
  • Several bug fixes: Ram bug, wall mirage bug, construction bug, invencibility bug, hunter mirage bug - to name a few. And more patches were announced.

The only thing that the old was slightly better is the units icon (maybe)

I loved the new unit icons from day one. It is a matter of perspective, I guess.

I see people saying that Mod Complex already provides HD for Praetorians. Don't believe that. I tell you why:

I am the modder who unlocked higher resolutions for original Praetorians and shared it with Mod Complex devs. I can safely say: this is not true HD! It is just higher resolution which allows you to see more of the map, nothing else. The actual graphical quality is still the same piece of crap.

And worse - the icons and panels do not scale to match the higher resolution. So you end up with this tinny icons when playing 1080p which are barely clickable.

It is just crap!

People also talk about the lack of mods in Praetorians HD Remaster as if it was a big deal. The truth is, it is not. I tell you why:

I have played Praetorians for several years in Game Ranger. I can safely state that 95% of the matches used only original maps and original races.

Do you know why? Mods created serious compatibility issues among players - especially Mod Complex whose Settings screen requires a Harvard degree to operate.

On top of that, all new races are poorly designed and have serious balance issues. Not to mention their questionable historical relevance to the timeline Praetorians fits in.

Yes, there were not many maps played in multiplayer from mods, but there were a few really good.

[GOD] Bridges Destroyed (8)
MOD Landscape Among Hills (2)
MOD Rio Arar (4)
MOD Battle For Supremacy (4)

Best maps from mods :)
And I played other maps VS CPU.

People not want that devs make mods, people wants that devs allowed them to make mods. Steam Workshop in game would be nice thing for those passionate people who wants to make something more than vanilla game.

There is nothing stopping you from making a mod right now and use it with your friends or versus CPUs. You don't need Steam workshop to make mods. Praetorians has mods without having Steam workshop at all.

Mod Imperial developers could easily adjust their maps to make them work with Unreal Engine. This is a trivial job to whoever has the skills on the field. So why don't they do it?

Dont agree that old game quality is a piece of crap.. Its still nice too..
Don't have problems with tinny iconc in classic game, and better, i think new ui takes mo screen space than it should (maybe it for console players, dont know how it looks on them).
Here some comparison betwen classic+higher resoliution and more camera distance and HD (max camera distance) :

Your screenshots clearly show that you can see just a bit more of the map in original Praetorians, while the panels, minimap and icons are ridiculously too small. It is not a good trade off IMO.

Small panels doesn't matter for me, I used to play with shortcuts, so for me it's faster to press few keybord buttons than mause click on them and you that "a bit" more view makes a difference in fast games managing troops and engaging enemy

agreed Scorpio
