Not a fan of the Mythos DLC that lets you play with magic powers and Warhammer Monsters but others do enjoy it for the fantasy play style that adds to the game.
The standard game with their additional hero DLCs is more close to a Classic total war with a nice take on portray the Iliad and Greek mythology without going overboard into a Hollywood characterisation (like the Mythos DLC). Campaign map has nice and solid mechanics and battle maps are varied and enjoyable to play.
You can choose to play the game in 3 styles:
Classic and Greek Mythology (Standard Game), plus Warhammer Monsters (with Mythos DLC).
Funny you mention that, I've been playing some Truth Behind the Myth mode lately because it reminds me of the film Troy.
Most important point, Troy is total war game with -very specific- setting, the Trojan War. I would describe it, as "heroic fiction in historical enviroment with greek mythology".
Many people do not understand that Troy is game about Trojan War and do not understand, what is Trojan War. Especially the so-called "history experts" :D
I think, You hint the Steam player's base, this is bit tricky;
The Troy is (again) in very special situation, it was released on Epic store for free for first 24 hours, and with 1 Year Epic exclusivity.
Most of potential players claimed Troy for free on Epic, and they did not need to buy same game on Steam again. This is why Steam player's base is very low, the Epic player base is not public, but 7,5 mil people claimed for free.
Anyway, It is single player game, You do not need other players :)
I liked very much how they resolved the mythology portray with the Truth Behind the Myth in the game, I though was well rendered and a fresh interpretation on mythology. Here's an epic Hollywood takes on The Odyssey from the 90s :)

Also a side note that Troy supports cross-play multiplayer between Steam and Epic.
-Most optimized total war game.
-Every campaign is unique, with completely different mechanics.
-Best enemy/allied AI of all total wars (Your enemies use the brain on campaign! , and your friends will act as allies this time!, no more braindead vassals/allies!).
-Mythos dlc give mythos mode much more wings to play. Expeditions are really cool, their monsters are op and balanced (lol, you can solo armies with the hydra, and the gryph if micro hard), and even their buildings are different to make every campaign unique.
-Now you have really reasons to expand asap: almost all factions has unique buildings that enhance their late game units, making your elite units the feeling of being truely unique (Example: Aggamemnon has a building that gives 5% range to their javelins, imagine stacking 20 capital provinces with that :V).
Cons:
-Overpriced dlcs.
-Allied AI is useful this time, but is truely a scumbag too lol. Everytime you go at war with your vassals, they will do the impossible not only to destroy them, but to conquer their territories, even stealing you (this is a nightmare playing with Aggamemnon mechanic, is like a swarm of rats waiting to feast their territories lol!.
-You have the option of trading regions, but they wont give you ♥♥♥♥♥, even if you give 2 or 3 regions for 1 ♥♥♥♥♥♥ region. So, technically unless you are diomedes and use dominance to even get a chance, its useless (but giving away unwanted territories to your allies is really good to eran resources!)
-Character skills are a little messy: is unintuitive, and had to read carefully what is your hero role. (some skills can even cripple a hero for example)
Go right ahead.
Support this cancerous developer whose only goal is to pump out as much garbage as physically possible so they can sell you “essential” dlc which should’ve been part of the release content.
if You like politics, characters and inner-faction micromanagment like in Three Kingdoms, Attila or Thrones of Britania , Troy is definitely not for You.
Mechanicaly the Troy is most similar to Warhammer (it is based on) , every faction has 2 unique mechanics, but there is not the inner-faction management. This makes it similar to older TW like Shogun 2 or Napoleon
On other side, Troy works with multiple resource system, which adds another micromanagment - You have trade often
