iron slag?
I have been "scrapping" some common guns to make room in my inventory to hold all the junk I need to sell for bullets.
I notice when scrapping these that I occasionally get a bullet, and usually some sort of something that I cannot see in my inventory. I get the little popup notification on the right side of the screen that after scrapping a half-dozen weapons I get 3 things. One of those is bullets. The other two I am not sure, the message disappears so quickly I cannot read it. I think one of them is "iron" something, maybe slag. But this does not turn up anywhere in my inventory. I thought I need some of these things to upgrade my weapons, but so far I am unable to see any of that. Am I missing something?

Tutorial says you may get upgrade materials from scrapping. I've only ever gotten bullets or iron slag which is a junk item. Suppose higher tier weapons may drop copper, silver or gold depending on the tier.

Spoiled for people who don't want to learn themselves, but short version - iron slag isn't an upgrade thing as far as I can tell, and can just be sold.

Weapons are upgraded with copper, silver or gold nuggets - the description of the weapon tells you what and how many you need to upgrade it, if it can be upgraded. If it's 4-star, I don't think it can be.

I don't think you get any upgrade material from scrapping weapons, just ammo.

Nuggets can be acquired from mining (you need a pick) or from taking bars to the blacksmith.

You definitely can get upgrade materials from scrapping weapons but the chance is low. The material you get corresponds to the tier of the weapon. Its only really worth crapping gold weapons if you really need it, the other metals you'll get more than you need.
