"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000142). Click OK to close the application."
I just tried playing for the first time since the update, and the game won't launch. I get the error in the subject line every time. I tried verifying the files, I tried uninstalling/reinstalling, restarting the PC, etc. None of the usual fixes worked. When I click "OK" to get rid of that error, I get "Untrusted System File (C:\Windows\System32\hid.dll), but as far as I can tell by Googling, hid.dll is a necessary System32 file (and has been on this PC since March 2019).

Is anyone else running into this? Anyone know how to fix it?

Hi,
1. Why do you want to reinstall HID.DLL? Do you receive any error message? If yes, please provide us the complete error message?
2. When exactly do you receive this error message?
3. Have you made any changes to the computer prior to this issue?

Hi,

HID.DLL is a library file for the USB interface HID, which processes user interface devices. HID.DLL is a system process that is needed for your Windows system to work properly.

Method 1: I would suggest that you run SFC scan on the computer which would scan for corrupt system files on the computer and replace them.

Method 2: Run a virus scan with Microsoft Safety scanner and check.
http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: Before performing the security scan take a backup of important data.

Method 3: You may perform a clean boot and check.
To help troubleshoot error messages and other issues, you can start Windows Vista or Windows 7 by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This kind of startup is known as a "clean boot." A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Note: After the troubleshooting, make sure to boot your computer to normal mode.

Give those methods a try.

HID.dll is utilized for devices like a mouse and keyboard that plug in via USB. That is why it is necessary.

If that doesn't work you can try following this website: http://www.dlldownloader.com/hid-dll/#About-Hiddll

I don't recommend any Methods offered that have a person modify the registry unless you are 100% confident in your ability to undo any changes.

With that said, I recommend Method 4 on the page, using System File Checker to see if the file is corrupt or malformed.

I eventually got mine to work by doing a Windows update. Apparently there were a few that were queued but hadn't been downloaded and installed yet. Did that, restarted, worked on the first try!

Ah I've experienced this same problem! The reason is because of windows being out of date. So you would just need to go to windows update settings and install an update

If you are unable to do a windows update, try resetting your pc. Don't take my word for this though. Do this if you are CERTAIN it's broken and needs the reset. (I don't know if troubleshooting could fix this or not)

Of course, it was broken for me and couldn't do a windows update and couldn't do a reset either. So I'm resorting to playing on a laptop.
