So this only happens within the same world? I've not been able to start a new world and have anything carry over. Am I missing something?

yea, unfortunately, it's same world. I'm hoping mods come out soon so I can change that.

The only thing that passes on is when you beat the game, it unlocks the ability to pick any race, specify world terrain, and pick what defenses the first valley has (e.g. eternal flame, earthquake machine, etc.)

Hmm ok, I can get behind that. And if people want to dl a mod, then cool. I read something that gave me the impression that the devs have been pretty supportive of moding.

Yeah each world is essentially meant to be a game in and of itself. You unlock ways to change the game by beating the game and getting certain achievements.

When you beat the game, do you keep unlocked backgrounds in addition to races?

with the 1.10 update, you unlock 4 clans. Each clan lets you pick from two different races and one background. The background is pretty weak, but it's still an upgrade from the default background.

overall, it's a small improvement, but I still rather have all backgrounds unlocked in the beginning.

Oh, I hope the community pushes back on that decision.

If we could unlock races and backgrounds either once we’ve achieved that in game, or by beating the game I think it would draw in a lot more interest for future playthroughs.

It feels discouraging to unlock alternative character creation choices, only be restricted to experience them by abandoning a fun run.

I second the community push back. I really don't like the way that when a world ends your unlocks are gone. I get you not carrying over diplomacy and items, but character unlocks just means for me that I rarely get to use the things I've unlocked because I'll restart a new world every so often. The same locations get old.

I could get behind having races and other things unlocked carrying over into a new world. I'd really hope there isn't anything like items carrying over because that's the whole point of creating a new world, that you're starting from scratch.

The way I think about this (and really what drew me to this game in the first place), it's the best of both a "rogue-lite" (die and make a new char but carry over lots of state and powerful items to the next one) and traditional roguelike (world dies and then you start again from scratch). Having anything of value carry over would negate the feeling of a fresh start, but like I said, I think carrying unlocked races over is pretty harmless and makes for a more diverse choice for subsequent playthroughs.
