That said, it's so loose that people who are not fans of the franchise can play the game and understand. This is both a good and a bad thing at the same time. It's pretty difficult to say if this was the best choice for Bloober Team to make because you want to maximize your profits but you also don't want to alienate people who are looking for a horror game and might want to look up Blair Witch as a franchise later because this game got them interested.
IMO? If it were me? I would have put more in, said "forget it, let it be little gifts to the fans and let it creep out the non fans so they'll look it up later". They played this part too safe.
But there's a lot in here that is indeed part of both the original movie and the newer movie, making this firmly the sort of sandwiched plot in between both. Saying what is there is making me far too spoileriffic.
Did I like the game? Yeah. Is the game flawed? OH YES IT IS! But there's a lot there that goes right over people's heads which is almost a great thing because you have to sit there. Since a lot of the first movie is found footage horror and you're not getting anything unless you watch it six times (bless your soul cause I'm not watching it) and the other movie was not that great (and I'm not watching it that many times to pick up on everything), you are going to miss everything that is in there.
I'm not a horror buff. I just appreciate some movies, even the bad ones. It's in there. It's incredibly spoil-y but some have pointed out exact scenes.
The most iconic thing I can tell you is the pictures of the devs you can collect that show the "famous" corner scene from the original movie. That's there and it wouldn't be a proper Blair Witch without it. Also, don't look at her. That's another movie call back without spoiling you.
THAT SAID...
Yes this was still kept so that people who didn't watch the movie(s) could enjoy it. I would guess there were many sequences cut and portions borrowed from subsequent games they had planned in order to make this game work.
Holy text wall Batman.

Thats not true at all. Watch blair witch 2016. What happens in the game fits the lore/mythos introduced in that movie perfectly. I would interpret what the dev's said in that interview, if they did say that, as their story doesnt have anything directly to do with the established characters from the movies.
♥♥♥♥ me, not even the second movie made any sense but at least it tried.
Now it's just: This forest does random ♥♥♥♥ including it ripping off the Purgatory parts of Silent Hill
Sorry but that movie was an enormous pile of ♥♥♥♥ that not even the makers understood.
And even if you take that movie - what's with the purgatory stuff all of a sudden?
The mystery of the witch was just the frame for the story about a group of Kits that lost their way in the forest and never where never seen again. Even in the interviews before they went to the forest, everyone seems to tell you something different about the Witch.
So for me its the same with the game, rthe game is great and it gives me that, was the first movie gave me. The athmosphere of being lost in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ forest where every sound can be really creepy
Great game
You liking the movie is completely irrelevant to it being part of the lore. If using a official, canon, part of a main story to explain the rules of said universe is "bad measure" then I don't know what to tell you. Learn to use critical thinking.
