According to my "Purchase History" I bought Standard Edition
But again I have 2 entries in my Steam Library.
And original will just sit in my library no need to even play it?
Yeah, the size is misleading (said the actress to the bishop).
Why is the install size smaller for the version which is more content rich?
- Textures were completely overhauled and optimized. This was part of a game-wide visual overhaul to unify the art style and performance across a number of zones.
- Some of the "making of" videos stored locally in the original are not downloaded during install for the Director's Cut. NB: These videos aren't accessible unless you go into the game folder, which is kind of silly.
- Some of the included "making of" videos use a new codec config and are much smaller. They were *huge* on Mac.
But yes, 100% you want the Director's Cut and not the one called "Barrow's Deep".Must be via a third-party reseller, though. You can't buy the OG anymore directly on steam or GOG.
I think I saw one a month ago for 5 bucks that still was for the OG on "g 2 a" or something.
Kira, wouldn't you be interested?

So I bought the "Bards Tale 4 Director's Cut - Standard Edition". As far as I can tell, there is no way to directly purchase the original Bards Tale 4 (non-director's edition). HOWEVER, upon purchasing the standard edition of the DC, the non-director's cut BT4 was automatically added to my library. I then upgraded to the Special Edition via the upgrade "DLC" to enable the cheat items and other goodies. 😁
So apparently there does seem to be a way to get the original BT4, I don't know if the same thing would have happened had I purchased directly the Special Edition of the BT4DC instead of going for the Standard Edition first and then upgrading via the upgrade pack.
But I'm certain my 7th play-through (if I ever get to that point) will be on the non-DC version of the game, just to see what the original looked like. I heard there were even more puzzles, and some fights were more exciting, I can't wait to see. 😊
*Me judges thee.*
Thee are found to be innocent in the Gaelic Realm!
But, so, wait... didn't you say you didn't own the OG here?:

And normally, the standard version or deluxe version have nothing to do with the OG or the DC version. It's just the difference as is shown here:

It's weird though, since many said they didn't have the OG, so one would think that, if it's automatic/standard that it gives you the OG, everyone would have two versions (or maybe they only do that on steam, and not on gog?).
I knew the reverse was true, of course: that those buying he OG later on got the DC version for free - like in my case, but I didn't realize they did it in reverse as well now.
So basically, you DO have the OG, then? Good, because I was thinking about buying you the "g 2 a" key for the OG, just to see you make another playthrough. ;-)
If you ever do, make sure to comment on the differences you experience, both "vibe-wise" as "play-wise". In fact, I'm actually curious to know what effectively changed, beyond the obvious Haernhold necropolis not being there. I remember some puzzles (especially at the fairy-labyrinth) were removed, but which ones? Seen your masoch... I mean, praiseworthy efforts in relentlessly trying BT4 out, this seems a job - well, hobby - fit for you, Kira! :-)
I bought the Deluxe Edition of BT4DC on GoG and got only the game itself (no non-DC copy).
I bought the Standard Edition of BT4DC on Steam and got the non-DC version of the Standard Edition for free. I then bought the Deluxe upgrade for the DC and it got upgraded to Deluxe (while my non-DC copy of BT4 seems to have remained the Standard Edition)....
Huh, well, ok, if I ever get around to playing BT4 (non-DC) I'll surely put something up. I'll try not to hurt myself too much in the process, tho.
Right now BT4 doesn't even seem to run for me, rather it starts but crashes after about a minute, and I don't really have the mental bandwidth to figure out what's up, especially since the DC runs fairly consistently. So we'll see.
Well, I think you just auto-got it with your steam purchase, but has little to do with standard or deluxe. Meaning GOG for some reason doesn't give you the original, regardless of deluxe or not.
The reverse makes more sense, of course: chil and me bought the original and when they moved on to the new engine and all, we received the DC for free (it was also the only version they continued with the bugfixes).
But, you know, I'm glad to know that people get the OG as well when buying the DC version (on steam, at least).
But so... it doesn't start with you? Did you try the win8 (or win7) compatibility setting in windows (I'm assuming you use win10 or later, but I forgot if you already said). Or maybe it's your graph card (there were some problems earlier with the OG with some cards); do you have nvidia or amd?
I recall there were some work-arounds mentioned in this forum of people having difficulty starting the OG up, back in the day... Maybe I could look them up for you, if you want. As far as I know, though, the OG still works fine on my win10 machine...
Edit: Yep, tried it out for half an hour: OG still works perfectly fine with me (well, apart from the usual bugs that remained in the OG 😉).
