You need the tankard to drink most booze (there are a few exceptions, for the Tortuga's shield quest for instance). But also: only Trow Squeezing you can drink for free, for elven wine and all the rest you need action/oportunity points, and the stronger the booze the more you need it. That's why if you don't have enough points, even if you have the booze in your inventory, you see some booze greyed out and others not, for usage.
Careful with the tankard-destroying, though. 😉 I think there are only a very limited amount (2-3?) of tankards in the whole game..
Is it? Only those two need only one point? I always thought it was more diverse, since I seem to remember the same as the parent poster: that some are greyed out while others are there. It's difficult to reconcile it with him saying he has dwarven ale but that doesn't show up (while you say it's free), while elven wine now does show up (while you say it's one point).
Since you're our local wizard and I forget things rapidly and it's been a while, I'll believe on your word, but then something is missing from the parent poster's post.
As far as I remember, there are only limited options that make booze not available and/or greyed out when in combat:
1) one does not have a tankard
2) one does not have the booze (any longer)
3) one does not have enough opportunity points
4) one is experiencing a bug
That covers it all, I believe.
well, I got a tankard, and I definitely have to booze (just made it!) and so next combat I have fingers crossed that it was just opportunity points issue. I thought chug was free but I guess some booze is not free. good to know!)
Well, there are a few exceptions to this rule. Namely 'special' booze that is needed for the drunkard quest of Tortuga's shield. Those don't show up as 'combatbooze' neither. Guess that would make point 5:
5) one wants to use special booze in combat, that is needed for a quest
That isn't the case for dwarf stout though, if I remember correctly..
