i can't force myself to play with those portraits. i refuse to play as white-haired-skinny-oldman mage! i might grow old later but not now!
i decide to postpone playing this game or shelved this if there is no new portraits or mod. maybe i play this in some distant future when i grow old enough comparable to that old man mage. hope my pc still running by then!
buying this game is the greatest regret i've ever feel. should have refund this while i can
I guess you'll just miss out on the great story line, combat, music and puzzles because you're worried about physical appearance. A tale as old as time, it seems.
so you suggest i should play a male mage with heavy armor from head to toe instead? lol
well at least this teach me to never bought games from this company. this makes me looks up to devs previous games which is no good to say the least. gonna blacklist this company
alright i'm leaving. anyway thanks and goodbye
For some it's a mountain, while for others it's a molehill, my friend. If you can't muster and don't want to engage a *Role* Playing Game because your age doesn't correspond to the age of the mage-portait, may I suggest switching to another genre? Mayhaps something else that doesn't involve playing a role (aka; as someone else) is more your cup of tea.
While you're at it, not only blacklist, but ban and excommunicate them as well, and even invoke a devious curse and Spell Of Bane on them! ;-)
Or, of course, as Chilkoot said, you get over it, don't sweat the small stuff, and enjoy the game.
I know there isn't a great selection in general but I ended up having fun with mine. "Melody's" preset kind of looked gender neutral so I played both male and female characters with that preset. Also the female warrior with the face paint. I made him a guy and named him "The Fabulous Murderface" and gave him the aggressive voice. It didn't take any enjoyment away from the game, it kind of made it more fun by making them a bit quirky. Heck, back during the BT1 days we only had one portrait for each class.
Yes, exactly, it used to be quite different back in the day, and yet we still had lot's of fun as well. And with some RPG's, even modern ones like The Witcher, you can't choose at all. It's as I said: it's in the eye of the beholder, and I think some people are really getting rather spoiled.
Now, it IS true it would have been nice to include some more portraits. Even with the one of Brian, it's no large amount. And I also don't understand why they didn't just "recolor" some of the (same) portraits; at least that would give some more (sub)choices, and it would have cost little time and money.
but anyway, it is what it is, and the point is, any player who drops an RPG because one thinks the age of a character doesn't correspond with your own, isn't a real RPG'er in my book. While graphics and more portraits deliver some extra eye-candy, they are not, and have never been, at the core of RPG-playing. It's a sign of the times that people sweat the details and fall so much over it they drop the game without trying it in earnest, and yet they think of themselves as RPG-players, still. But in all honesty, it doesn't surprise me. I've seen the most idiotic things been said - like the North not being in the same direction as the north in the old BT's - as a reason to trash the game.
The game is not without it's faults, but if you're a bit open-minded and want to try a modern take on an old-school style RPG, it's perfectly possible to have a fun experience.
Yes, it wasn't "faithful" enough for the nostalgic-obsessed purists... but luckily, the more people play it, the better it's score gets. eventually, it will get a "very good" score, as it deserves.
Same sentiment here. The "not-so-pretty" characters are more endearing, if less immediately appealing. I usually end up editing all my game saves to use the custom portraits and voices of the story-based characters (Rabbie, Lioslaith, etc) as they are pretty awesome, IMO.
The only one I can't get working is the Green Lady, so my knockoff character "The Verdant Slapper" is stuck with a stock portrait /shrug
I can't imagine it being so off putting as to not want to play the game at all, but to each their own I guess.
i enjoy the game and manage to defeat mangar so far.
it's pretty challenging to play with 1 character even in easy. tho some fight (like mangar's) requires me to reset skills build and switching around weapon to use.
hope i can make it to the end
i rather have no portraits at all i can have it. it's just so wrong and dampen my spirit everytime i cast a spell inapropriate portrait/character. even a alphabet A is better than not matching portraits. having limited portraits means you've got so limited choice design creating character. bad portraits means only bad character design you can make. its frustrating that your character is so badly design compared to well made npcs there.
if i don't like role playing i might as well only use npcs characters tho if i dont like roleplay i will never buy this game to begin with
Not playing the game at all because of a potrait would have been rather silly. As I and chilkoot and others have said: the game is quite enjoyable if you don't sweat the small stuff.
True; the game is not without it's faults neither, and some more portraits would be welcome, sure. But if one isn't hypersensitive about it, there is no reason to just dump a fairly good and enjoyable game for it.
I'm wondering though: why not use some of the MC portraits? They're reasonably good, and often exhibit a bit more stellar performance with the voice-overs dialogues as well - especially Crux.
Also: chilkoot made a playable character based on the Rabbie portrait (the one in the intro of the game). If you liked that one, you can ask him for it..
and also this game is impossible to solo anyway. the bald priest boss in rookery spamming mind blast hence stunlock. i know the game not to meant solo.
but again my point stand. devs got worst design making i've ever see in games
We all think our opinion is right, my friend, that's why it's difficult to sensibly debate something which has subjective traits in it. As you can read, however, others have other opinions of it, so I would say you may be right indeed, but only in your own mind.
I would agree the game is nigh impossible to play solo, with one character. However, as said, you meet other characters along the way (the MC ones I refered), it's hard to see how *none* of them meet your esthetic senses even in the slightest. They must be stringent indeed, then. Maybe a bit *too*.
Crux, Sybale, the green lady, the dwarf, the paladin... You meet other adventurers along the way; why not use those, then?
Some of the pre-mades like Green Lady look pretty good and I agree that even some of the NPCs have better hair than our characters.
I wouldn't want to play solo. Even for the achievement for winning with 3 characters was a challenge and I dropped it down to easy for that.
Hopefully you find a happy medium you can live with as there really is some very enjoyable combat, environments, music, etc.
