Worked fine for me. You shouldn't always let yourself be intimidated by the red color of the enemies. It's an indication, but nothing more than that; several times, I managed to win even against those in red (though it is difficult and you need good preparation; not only choosing your skills wisely, but also enough booze and health potions.)
If it really doesn't work, go back to Skara below, and you'll see some new (or old) groups there that used to be red but are now orange. Or try all the quests in skara below and above, so you get experience points enough so you can level up.
I mean, lots of people have succeeded, so I don't think it's an inherent problem with balancing/the game, but rather your party that isn't optimised or prepared enough. ;-)
It happens that I just got through the lowlands, and with a party that was less well balanced then when I played it in the original, because I wanted to try new skill(tree)s out which I hadn't taken in the roiginal (because I thought they were weaker). So.. I have a pretty weak party now, and Istill managed it. (btw, did you succeed in getting the Strifespear? That should help a lot)
Conversely, if you *really* can't do it with the party/skills you have, you can always change both your party as your skills (with a mercenary token) in the guild.
