How long to beat?
If you skip all puzzles, how long does it take to beat the game on Normal?

12 hours, 43 minutes, 21 seconds.

Why so precise ? 😎

I was slightly joking. ;-)

It depends a bit what you mean by "how long does it take". I've seen speedruns of Dark Souls of half an hour, for instance, but a normal person would spend hours on it.

I guess speed-running BT4 could be done in under an hour too, if you really wanted to and skipped all the puzzles and avoided as much combats as possible, and ignored exploration.

But, if you play it normally WITH combat and exploration, and just skipp the puzzles, I would say about 20-25 hours.

But that still means you made all the right decisions. Look at me, I've finished it (aka, beat the end-boss), but I just can't seem to beat redcap and the king of Hearnhold (the new dungeon). The generals were tough, but ultimately, I succeeded. But the king, and especially redcap, seems insurmountable, as of yet. So, technically, I didn't finish everything there is to do, and I've been playing for 150+ hours, and I've skipped most puzzles as well (since I did them already in the original), except for those of Haernhold.

One suggestion to you, though, if you want to finish everything of combat: stock up on ressuplies BEFORE you take the hungering blade. After you take it, the game goes in...ermm... survival modus, and it gets almost impossible to get new stuff anymore. My current problem now, for instance, is that I have two bards in my team, but no drinks anymore, so their efficacity is greatily diminished, while my adversary is one of the strongest out there (imho, redcap is far more difficult then Yadis).

I've got a severe shortage of booze and healing potions by now, but I can't get them anymore, and, alas, I can't seem to find any of my saves of before the hungering blade: it seems all got overwritten by the new ones (at least on steam). And since I synced with steamcloud, it's on both my PC's. Very frustrating. I would suggest to the devs to, next time, make sure some very important milestones of automatic saves should be kept regardless of what else one makes as saves - like at least the first save right before one klicks to take the hungering blade.

Some sort of backup for such saves would have been good. Now I can't really progress, yet I can't go back neither, unless I restart completely a new game.

Thanks for the more detailed explanation. I saw people report 50-70 hours of gameplay but I expected puzzle skipping to cut significantly into that. I have very limited game time available so with RPGs I'm more inclined to play the moderate-length ones only.

I sunk 332hrs into this game. I really micromanaged everything.

Haha, well, you can do that too, of course. ;-)

Been a while since I played the game any further (on my third playthrough), but today I decided to give another go, mainly because I got the vibe for it again, and also because I bought a new monitor, and wanted to test things out on higher resolution and freesync and all that. Still get a bit of microstuttering, and some rare weird graphical glitches where stones seem to take half a second to pop up (didn't have that with my old graphic settings, I think). But I finally got further with Haernhold, whom is a b*tch if you're low level, but strangely enough, I had trouble in my third playthrough even when I am high level. I think it has to do with putting it on hard mode instead of normal, and, also, because I didn't optimize my party very well this time, because I just wanted to try out stuff I didn't tried yet in my other two playtroughs, so I picked whatever I didn't try yet.

I couldn't even manage the first floor of entrance of Hearnhold, and had to slip by to the left. ;-)

But for some reason, now that I've retried it after several months, that first welcome party really went easy, now. Not sure why? think one needs a bit of luck, and tactics matter a lot too. I just made sure the gremlin-thingies (forgot the name) with the bombs always exploded *inside* their group, instead of mine, and lo and behold, those wizards were glass cannons, it would seem.

Also, I revisited Kylearan's Tower. Because I couldn't figger out how to make elven weapons myself (crafting), while I clearly remember crafting them the first two times. and boy, I must have been sloppy when I started my third time a year or so ago, because there were a lot of places I forgot to look there! (In fact, I didn't even remember there were SO many hidden places down there!).

anyhow... Let's see.

I played BT4 OG for 159,6 hours, and the DC for 394,6 hours. that still beats yours! ;-) THOUGH I must admit, as I said, that entails three times playing the game through (or almost through for my third).

I think the only achievement left for me, is beating the endgame with 3 characters.

I have 1235 hours and 52 minutes in BT4. Approximately 120 hours in the OG version and the rest in the DC version (two copies actually, I played mostly on GOG but I bought the Steam version as well to be able to re-do the achievements and it also offered a free copy of the OG which was new for me at that point).

This time was enough for 8 full play-throughs, and I did a bunch of other stuff like shoot a handful of videos, I replayed some parts of the game multiple times like when doing my analysis for the Puzzle Weapons guide, or just left it open while working and listening to the sounds & music of the game.

I think my "net" play-through time is around 40 hours without any tarrying or shenanigans, assuming that I beeline for the Mercenaries first and I skip all optional/skippable content, and it takes me around 8 hours to complete the main quest until finishing the Glade. Sulfur Spring & Iwon Rheg is about an hour, and then the Isle of Stronsea might be another 4-6 hours with Castle Langskaal another hour (this one I even recorded in a video with my all-Fighter party). I will often get to the point of no return (skipping all optional content) in approximately 16 hours. Then going back to the optional content and finishing all those off is another maybe 6-8 hours without Haernhold, Haernhold itself is another 12-16 hours depending on how tight my strategy is and the end sequence is maybe 3-4 hours. Altogether under 40 hours for me to complete every bit of content. I do tend to play on hardest difficulty and I often played challenge/mono-archetype parties in the end to make things more exciting and challenging.

But I do a lot of messing around, like respeccing characters, I absolutely love organising my equipment into categories and I tend to use not only the containers in the Old AG but also in the vicinity in Lower Skara Brae to make sure everything is properly stored. After clearing Haernhold I tend to use the containers there as well as my sort of special intra-dimensional wardrobe. I mean, I might have an impulse to create an Archmage, or Warchanter, or Guardian, or whatnot at one point just for fun and so I want to make sure that I have a full set of equipment stored somewhere for that purpose. The same with all different kinds of characters. In some cases I completely replaced my party roster more than once during the game just to make it more engaging. Having additional equipment sets neatly stored help with this a lot.

Kira beats us all. 😌

In fact, with those hours, I think she beats me, Chilkoot, and the next three top players COMBINED. 😝

It's not about beating anyone honestly, I tend to spend a lot of time playing my favourite games but on the flipside I don't play too many games. Also thanks to games that measure time in game as well, I noticed that a lot of my "official" play time is idle. I think around 300-500 hours of my time are actual playing time I spent on one of my play-throughs.

But yeah I did finish the game 8 times, so there's that. (Arguably 8.1 times because in OG I did the 3-strong achievement and the regular win achievements using the same main party, just replaying the end sequence. For some reason the game doesn't award you the regular gamewin achievement if you have only 3 characters... Go figure. AFAIK this is also like this in DC.)

I was joking. It's obvious there is no competition here, like on a competitive multiplayer game. :-)

I play not many games myself neither. I *am* a bit of a hoarder (mostly of RPG's), Though. I think I have about 1800+ games, but I've played... maybe... 20 in total? :-p Of which 5-6 extensively, and the rest barely.

These last months, I've only played a bit of Cyberpunk, Baldur's gate 3, and BT4.
