It’s just not as interesting as the other games, on top of being the unfortunate middle child that is the least refined out of all of them (1 and 2 being remade, 4 and 5 sharing most of their DNA with 0).
Yakuza 3 is still a good game though
The gameplay is Hard and Arcade like, demanding you to grind more than usual Yakuza games and be technical with your combos and wall bounce strats.
In the long run the game is great gameplay wise, you'll just hate doing NG+ with the first half of the game being boring stuff to do.
If you just want a quick run of it or you're a casual player you'll hate it with passion.
I would skip 6 instead.
Actually inside of my heart I just live preteding 6 didn't exist.
Big problem, the combat is awful, I recommend play it in easy. The Karaoke is alright but it's nice because it was their first time. The side quest are funny.
I love Yakuza 6 because the game shows me that Kiryu is finally tired of dealing with the Tojo clan. He doesn't want to be in Kamurocho. The ending was alright.
edit: if I have to choose which game to skip, it would be Yakuza 4. The story was a mess. I don't even want to try to remember it. xD
However... The beginning hours sacrifice good pacing for babysitting and the babysitting happens throughout sections of the entire game.
If you want immersion and the continuation of Kiryu's story.. Go for it.
If you are just in it for busting up Yakuza and mini-games.. Maybe not.
But I would also lump in Yakuza 5 with Yakuza 4 in the garbage bin.
Sorry to fans but forced Haruka Dance Dance Revolution segments, Saejima once again playing 'prison break', and Akiyama being reduced to such a minor role really killed me.
In a word: yes. In all seriousness though, I'd still play it b/c even the poorest Yakuza game is still a good game.
so... i can't agree with the people who says the game is bad.
but, well... it is an early PS3 era game. so have it in mind.
Yakuza isn't like Final Fantasy were each installment is a stand alone title, they depend on and build off one another, and are best played in chronological order (IMO) now that we have the Kiwami remakes along with 0 (zero).
I read somewhere that initially the turn based combat was more of a proof of concept, but when fans saw it in action they seemed to really like it so the developers implemented it into Year of the Dragon. AFAIK up until that point it was going to be a beat em up like the other games.
