The server needs to be on a separate steam account than the clients. Each client needs it's own steam account. This usually involves running the server on it's own PC. The server will also need to be configged to only allow friends to join, and add the steam account id for each player.

thank you, not a good way to do it though as games like rust its quite easy running your own server and join it etc. but ok cool thank you for the response i guess you guys will still look at ways to host and play on one pc maybe? since it is early access, i would also like to tell my friends about the game but with so many friends i would prefer to play on private srevers with them own hosted etc.

I added LAN support to the server in the 1.0.0 update, I've not tested it, but theoretically it should work if you add config option bForceLAN=true

This is, actually, a very useful thread.
The question is: if, hypotetically, I have another Steam account, can I launch a server on it via a virtual machine on my PC and join it using my first Steam account?

My current hardware should be powerful enough for running both server on a virtual machine and game and OS at the same time. Depending on the answer I'll make a decision whether I will try to do what I asked about above or not and simply save my time and money.

According to what SuperRhino (a developer) has written here above, the main condition is to have 2 different Steam accounts. So, I assume, that it might be possible, I'd just like to get the confirmation that it really is. Thanks.

Pity. Though the idea seemed good. Thanks again anyways.

Try bForceLAN=true
I agree and some documentation would be wonderful as well by the developer not the community. i do understand why he do not just want to add a lan option with piracy so bad these days but hosting a server that does check should be an option like rust and other titles allow as well
