How does this game compare to Football Manager?
So, I love strategy games, and while I hate soccer and baseball, I absolutely enjoy FM21. How does this compare as far as levels of simulation, gameplay, difficulty, customization, and strategy? Do you think I'd enjoy this game too?

People aren't giving you the right info here. I've got management games for sports I know nothing about and i wound up liking them. You can like this.

The major differences between this and FM are:

- FM focuses a lot on in-game management. It's not unusual for an FM player to put 100 hours into the game and barely make it though 1 season. There are people who play OOTP like that, but here you're more like a 'director of football'. I play through a season in around 5 -6 hours and I'm fooling around with minor leagues and stuff like that. You can streamline the game as much as you want and make the playtime per season far less. Or more.

- There's no media and direct player interaction in OOTP. Zero.

- RL baseball doesn't have a setup where you can move up through the leagues. But you can set up a custom league with promotion/relegation here.

- I find the game to be easier to beat than FM, probably because I'm much more experienced at it but also because there are fewer aspects of the game (in game management, player motivation, etc...) that you can fail at. It's about acquiring the best players and also about recognizing which role players can fill your teams particular needs.

On other areas of the game, I've played solo for 19 years and only briefly spent time in one online league. If you're unable to create a challenging solo play experience then you're not working hard enough on setting up your leagues IMO. Solo play is fine, and I don't have to bother with some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ trying to fleece me on a trade 5 times a day, or forum drama.

People are mad at OOTP because development of the main part of the game has been absolute trash for around 5 years now, largely sacrificed for development of a pay to win game called Perfect Team. PT has made OOTP developments shedloads of cash, and enabled them to sell their game to some dodgy Korean company who specializes in microtransaction oriented mobile games. That Korean company is taking over OOTP starting next year, so this version of OOTP will likely be the last one which is worth a damn.

Don't listen to those who say Perfect Team hasn't impacted the base game, they're delusional. The inclusion of PT slowed development of the base game to a standstill.

But none of the latter means anything to you, because you don't have any prior versions of the game and can't be disappointed by the lack of progress. From your point of view it's a great buy, and well worth it even if you never touch PT. I've put more time into this franchise than any other game.

If you can get 18, 19, or 20 for significantly less than what you'd pay for this game, get those because there's no differences of note. Otherwise get this.

IF you don't like baseball, no.

I don't think that matters at all. Like I said before, I was never interested in soccer either, but really enjoy the strategy behind football manager, making me appreciate the technical aspect of the sport even more.

I haven't played FM21 but played one of the older versions for a short time. Which part of FM21 do you like the game play or management side? I don't play the games in OOTP (far to tedious) but enjoy the management side very much. I'm a lifelong baseball fan not sure thats a prerequisite. Difficulty depends on the team you select and you can make it much more/less difficult with settings. The game is always challenging.

This version goes on sale often, you should be able to buy an older '19/'18 very cheap. If you don't care about the players it shouldn't matter. There are some changes every year but the older games should be fine.

It does. If you don't like baseball, you won't enjoy this game. It's very different from FM.

Could you tell me in what ways it's different from FM? Why you think I won't enjoy it?

Dude, if you hate baseball, you won't like this game. But, if you really need more:

You can't "train" players or anything like that. In this game, if you have an insane prospect who has 80 stamina and great stuff/control/movement and only two pitches, you can't tell him "learn a pitch" or "improve this. Likewise, for position players, you can't tell them to "work on this" or in the offseason, "learn this position."

That would be an enjoyable improvement to the franchise, for sure...

Honestly, I don't like baseball that much. I haven't watched a baseball game since I was a little kid, I couldn't tell you who won the last World Series, or even that last 10 of them. I've been playing FM for decades (since Champ Man) and really enjoy OOTP a lot. There are somethings that OOTP does, especially with playing historic teams, players, and league creation that I wish FM had.

Thanks so much for the answer! I guess the biggest question I have about the game are if there's leagues and other tournaments like in FM that you can go through, and work your team up through the ranks.

Mate, I've played both franchise for the past 20+ years, Football Manager since the ChampMan days, and OOTP since the beginning. Both franchise have declined over recent years, OOTP moreso, especially with the addition of Perfect Teams.

You see everyone saying this, but please, don't listen. In case you didn't know, when you go to your computer and buy the game, there's not gonna be some magician standing by that hypnotizes you and forces you to only play perfect team. You can just... not play perfect team! Wow, I'm a genius.

You can play as any team in MLB history complete with accurate rosters (and transactions, injuries) starting in any season from 1890-Today and beyond. Any kind of fictional league is also possible, as well as many international leagues such as NPO and KBO. You can even use them as feeder leagues to the MLB. Also WAY more in-depth management than FM.

Where has OOTP declined, exactly?

IMO it hasn’t declined, the core of the game gets yearly upgrades (perhaps not enough to justify a yearly purchase but that is most sports games in general). It seems that included a brand new feature that has zero to do with the core of the game is enough for people to think it has declined.

TL;DR adding Perfect team =/= degrading the single player mode
