You were playing multiplayer, a few of your companions (original or made via Withers) gained enough xp to level up, but your son did not bother to actually follow through the levelling up and thus you got an error and could not save. You then manually levelled them up and it fixed itself.
So what likely happened was, that your son initiated the levelling up procedure, but did not select one of the options required to level up the character. Instead of doing so, pressed just escape or somehow managed to return to his character's view (sorry dont play mp) thus leaving the level up process unfinished. This is likely what caused the bug.
The levelup process was started not finished, and definetly not cancelled. (It was as to say abruptly stopped.)
Okay, if you can still reproduce the issue(though hopefully you cant) i would have actually tried to single out the "created" character. As they are a bit as to say "newer" addition to the game i would figure their "unleveling" was the cause.
I know i totally did not level up my non used members sometimes for 3-4-5 levels and no issues. (but that was like around patch 3 since i last played. Lost all interest:P But all the issues folks face with the game interest me:D)
Allthough i also did not really use rests but i saved a ton.
I don't for the me the game is an utter disappointment to the point i just could not continue after reaching the house of hope:P
(i supported it from like day 1 EA.)
But that is just my imho. I still got POE, POE2 and WoTR to enjoy:)
Also being proactive and creeping around the forums checking out issues is a good attitude keep it up.
For me, stuff like BG3 is best played with at least one other person. Unfortunately, being a bit older, living in the middle of nowhere and not having friends, it limits playtime to when my son or brother are available. I have plenty of other games, but sharing the experience can improve any game.
