2 rune slates in starting area that can't be read

There's a table in the starting area that has three rune slates on it; the first talks about the nautiloid being a living ship, but the other two say nothing when I try to read them. I assumed maybe my character can't reach them to read them so I tried moving as absolutely close as possible and from multiple angles but still nothing.

I picked up the two slates and put them in my inventory but nothing; they can't be read at all. Was this intentional or a mistake?
