Can't rejoin end-game?

So game crashed after the elder brain cut-scene, my friend who is hosting ended up in the camp before where everyone is gathered, and now I can't rejoin the game.

On my end it shows a message error 'Joining failed: You can't join this game until the host takes a Long Rest.', but it seems there is no way for him to sleep or do anything other than try to talk and finish I guess.

Okay, so I found a thread with a similar issue.

The suggested workaround did the job.
Load a game previous to entering the final area, let the other people in the party, and then load the last save game. In my case, my friend saved during the final camp before talking to Withers and I had no issue.
