Multiplayer host can't control computer characters

I was playing a new multiplayer game with a friend, the first time playing this game. I didn't realize I was supposed to be able to control the computer characters as the host of the game. However, my friend who I was playing with has played previous BG games and told me I could control the characters in our party by clicking on them. I tried multiple times, but couldn't figure out how to do it. Clicking on the character in the game, clicking on the character's party icon, etc. Eventually, we found out that my friend could control the characters, but not me. I am rather confused by this since party hosts tend to have control over the party. Is there a setting I missed/setup incorrectly or is this a bug?

I experienced the exact same problem in the multiplayer game I was playing. No idea how to solve it, sorry Thiccframes.

The character and companion assignment can be adjusted in the options screen you can see in this screenshot

Sounds like the assignment were all for your friend at that time. So best to check that next time via ESC -> Multiplayer
