Patch #5 broke companion sidebar
As title.

At first I thought it was because I was loading my previous character from a patch or 2 ago (to see their epilogue) but with my current character it happens too: portraits are blank, names are overlayed in text squeezed between the portrait borders and the left edge of the screen, and this makes it so that the total bar, or what should be the bar, covers way more of the screen than it did.

Now, I *am* running mods, but not ones that influence the UI in any way, only a few visual and rule changes. Could still be an element messing with the bar of course, so has anyone else experienced weirdness?

There is your problem and no the patch didn´t break the companion sidebars at all.

It´s your mod(s) that is/are not compatible with the current version of the game anymore that break it.

I play without any mods and don´t have this issue. Either remove your mods or wait until they are updated by the mod-author.

Your fault for using mods and updating your game. Mods have to update to become compatible with the current updates, and the authors aren't magicians. Its your mods. No one non-modded is having this issue. Learn to stop your game from updating on a modded playthru.. removing mods from a save will probably continue to be a broken save.

Like why is this so hard? Not to be rude, but really? This is a known problem for actively-patching games. Script Extender always needs updating every patch and fix. Its just the nature of the beast and until then this = broken issues in your game. Its not new, mysterious or a very super rare bug that can happen.

I'm assuming you're not using mods. In that case, I wasn't asking *you* specifically. :)

I was asking people, who are also using mods, if they were experiencing similar issues, despite not using mods that influence the UI.

Don't break your neck while getting off that high horse.

Just because a mod supposedly doesn't touch the UI, doesn't mean that it's mere presence isn't breaking something in the game that is messing up an unrelated UI element.

I also mod my game, but i bite the bullet and did a clean reinstall of the game, and that element of the UI is working pretty much as it should.

Even removing all mods and starting a new game didn't clear it up, so now I'm re-installing too...

keep in mind that simply removing the mods from the mod manager will not clear up the effects that the mod may have on the game. You gotta delete the config files located in the appdata, as well as the mod folder in there. check for some guides in the guide section for removing mods to make sure you completely remove them.

Thanks, one of the guides seems to have cleared up the vanilla game.

Also, by process of elimination (not that I had many mods to begin with) I've narrowed down the culprit: 'Improved Dragonborn Breath Weapon', which after reading into it does indeed add a single small and situational indicator to the UI. My bad.

If you have a mod that changes the hot bar (for me it was the "better hotbar mod"). the mod author has made a new mod called "Better hotbar 2". i updated to that mod and it fixed it. Hope this helps if you havent found a solution yet.

Hey everyone so I had experienced the same bug with my companion side bar as windwalker85 describes. After doing some research to confirm my suspicions I knew it had to be that one of my mods were out of date with the newest patch by Larian. To be safe I updated the "Party Limit Begone" as well as "ImprovedUI" mods. This solved my issue and when I loaded the game everything was working as intended! Hope this helps someone in the future Goodluck :D

And this is why you should always keep your mods updated as well as the game.
The better mods get an update to match the game within a day or two usually.
If you experience any issues with the game after an update, removing any mods older than the last update that "caused" it should be your first troubleshoot step as they're to blame. Not the game.

Indeed.

I had to eventually cut out the Breath Weapon mod because it wasn't getting updated. Luckily I could continue my game, just have to click away a warning about save game tampering each time lol.

Maybe adjust the title of your post so it says "Outdated mod broke my sidebar"?

No, because at the time I didn't know that. If people are having a similar issue where they think a patch broke something, they'll be able to more easily find the topic if I keep it like this.
