So yes, I wrote a detailed bug report on this in the end. Ultimately Nere being killed before you get him out, results in breaking the cutscene that follows when you free the surviving trapped gnomes on the other side. There is supposed to be a confrontation, but it can't happen because Nere is dead. So the scene gets bugged and any npc that was supposed to be a part of that scene is also bugged and unresponsive. So it breaks the game.
All I was trying to do is save the gnomes by killing Nere early and not having to go into the confrontation.
I might try to replicate, maybe next week.
