Error - 516 [SOLUTION]

After a quick search, I don't think someone has posted this on the Steam Discussions. So I'm putting the post I made on Reddit over here, in case it can help someone.


What Causes the Error? - Speaking to a trader who defaults to Trade mode instead of Barter mode. You will get Error 516 when you try to save. Switching that Trader to Barter mode and exiting the conversation WILL NOT fix it, they will still open back up to Trade mode.


Solution 1 - Barter with another Trader that does default to Barter mode. After you exit the conversation you can save again.


Solution 2 - Plug in a controller, and let the game switch to "controller mode" (you'll see the UI change completely). Then speak to any trader. Once in dialogue with them, you'll see an option in the bottom right to "Press Y to Trade". After you exit trade, you should be able to save again.


Example - For me, Quartermaster Tali was defaulting to Trade mode and broke my game. Dammon still defaulted to Barter and was able to fix it. It may not be the same traders for you though, I've seen other people say Dammon broke theirs.

This is ultimately an art not a science. Its plausible all your traders are defaulting to trade, if you don't have a controller for Solution 2, you might be screwed until an update fixes it though (although I didn't have this problem till update 3, so I think updates caused it in the first place).

Reminds me when the game used to work prior patch 3.

I once had a error 516 happen without any traders involved after the patch, but that time it let me fix the issue by overwriting a previous save. But when the trader glitch happened this workaround failed. So the 516 must've been caused by something else that time. Unfortunately I have no clue what it might be because it was my first encounter with the bug so I wasn't paying attention to possible triggers beforehand.

Still, if you hit a 516 and you didn't talk to any traders, maybe overwriting a previous save will work. No guarantees but hey, it worked one time so worth a shot.

Hi! Another way is the solution.When the trading mode is turned on, you can switch to barter without leaving to load the save made before entering the trade.It helped me.
