[Solved] Trying to install .NET fails every time

Says I'm missing dotnet msi file in a directory that doesn't exist

the third solution about the registry editor was the the ticket for me, may some lost soul find solace

The correct dotnet installer is already in your BG3 install:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\DotNetCore\windowsdesktop-runtime-6.0.11-win-x64.exe

I ran that and it solved my issues.

I am under impression that verify/repair runs those installers too and downloads them if missing.

In doubt, uninstall .NET completely first using RevoUninstaller and its advanced options.

Your solution does not work for GoG version. It does not download and store runtime. But verify and repair works for gog too.

Use RevoUninstaller with its advanced options to delete all traces of .NET from your PC (Windows features and such alike) and then let Windows update handle to proper new download.
