NPCs disappearing in Grymforge area
I arrived off the boat at the Grimforge area, met the Draugr trying to free Nere, explored a little bit and went back to my camp. On returning to the area every NPC had disappeared and only Nere's corpse was lying where the rubble used to be.
I found a bunch of dead gnomes in one area and some dead drow in another.
Lots of stuff was marked red that I could 'steal' but no one was around...
Then when leaving the underdark via the lift a gnome appears to talk to me before disappearing again when I finish talking to him.

Mate that's ok, not bug. You are not supposed to rest at the camp after arriving to this place. If you go to your camp DURING THIS QUEST - Nere will die and everyone will leave location forever (kinda you rested 1 day in camp so ofc he died). Just don't go to camp and it will be ok :pickax:

What like literally everyone? not a single npc in the entire grymforge area? seems really strange, there were like shops and prison areas with no one there...

And why mark all the items lying around as stealing if there is literally not a soul around to catch you stealing?

I've also heard that you can rest at least one time during the Save Nere quest without him dying

Yes it is intended as they are here for Nere. Try speaking to everyone and not resting. Most of the fights in the area are skippable an may be done after Nere.

You may short rest. I'm not sure you may do a long rest.

I think one long rest is allowed as that is when you get the telephatic help request. But i only rested in the game when it was for story progression so cannot confirm, but that was what other players said.

It made me want to stop playing, because I wanted to talk to the Draugr and maybe save some gnomes, was not sure if the same thing would happen if I made a new character ether.

Its a bit abrupt, i give you that. Imho the fact Nere will die and you canno't rest is not emphasized enough.
I was myself surprised by it because i was doing everything else around the Nere encounter as i expected a changing scenery quest once i finish it.
And i rested doing the adamantium forge.
I normally accept the dices but i've in that case came back to a previous save as my intention was absolutely not prevent myself to all the interactions with draugr.
I'd suggest you do the same.

These kind of decisions actually are not warned or emphasized at most places. I was lucky that i chose the approach for myeslf to have my first rest once i reach level 5. And then i actually figured i am doing well why not rest when needed? So i had to take 3 rests in a row, because i finished all of ACT 1 part, before going through the Mountain Pass and had to catch up with the cutscenes. I did not even take a short rest during that time.
This way i was able to not miss out such events. Though there are 3 events you can fail even so, because fast traveling to camp already makes them advance.

Yes but it's fine most of the times.
Its not about missing an event or a conversation sometimes, you feel with Nere you're missing an entire zone with lots of NPCs to talk to.
Thats something you expect when you kill entire groups of people, not really with one dude you've to timely save.

I...don't recall not resting in Grymforge? Maybe I only did once, but I could have sworn I long rested more than once - i tend to do a lot of them. I dug out Nere and went through the whole chain and the only problem I ran into in the Adamantine forge is the bug that prevents you from making both weapons (and I didn't want to reload). But I didn't do it immediately, I scoped out the entire area first. Did a lot of back and forth travel.

Well there is one other. Lae'zals. githyanki patrol encounter. If you have Laezal in the party she rushes ahead of you. Most of the folks therefore jump to camp to grab a sub. And when they arrive at the patrol area Laezal is dead and not reviveable.:P
So....yeah:D

Ah yeah, funny how people react.
I've rushed to the dialogue wit 3 people as my direct reaction was to follow her. And played the dialogue good not letting her talk.
I was just mad being encumbered with all her stuff.
But you may send things to your camp without spending time in the camp so that was perfect.
Never i've have thought to go to camp take a fourth, funny :)

I dropped her backpack.
That fight is actually already hard, and having your main tank lose all support items makes it harder. It is one of those let us troll the players encounter.:P

Waukeen's rest is another one like that. I had no water nor create water item or spell on me so i figured i quickly go to the emerald grove and grab rain dancer and the 40 carafe of water from my camp. (I totally forgot about this encounter from EA:D)
And i get the guy died in the fire...a few more reloads and i realized it is the fast travel that effs it up so i reloaded a bit earlier save, got the stuff i needed and went there.
