Characters refuse to enter combat.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I'm just not understanding how the "ungroup" mechanic works compared to the Divinity games.

Generally, if I ungroup a stealthed character to move them into position for an ambush or a backstab, that is the only character that will enter combat. Then, I can't get other characters to join. I would imagine that as soon as I make the initial attack, all characters in the party would join in.

Even if I leave the party grouped then manually enter turn-based mode and position everyone that way, it will not include the rest of the party after the initial sneak attack. Only the single character will be in combat with ALL of the enemies.

How do you ensure the whole party joins combat?

If they're ungrouped, and stealthed, they won't initiate combat, until they're discovered in which case they'll have an initiative roll

If you want the whole part to join in, you'll have to have them grouped and out of stealth

I'm not following. How do you initiate surprise attacks, then? There's a specific mechanic that allows you to gain a free round against enemies if they're "Surprised!" at the onset of combat...but that's completely useless if my other characters are not in the attack order.

So you have to go into turn based mode (shift+space) to allow each character to get hidden, into position and then you can initiate your attack. At least that's how I assume it works, by entering combat already in turn based, your other characters will be in the queue to move and fight

I've never done an ambush like this before, so I'm entirely unsure if that works

That sounds right. It's what I was expecting to happen.

But, it's not. I think it must be a bug. Even if I have a character about 10 meters from the character that attacks first, it will be ignored. Only the character that attacks will be in combat.

The only way I can seem to initiate a proper combat -- with the whole party involved from the start -- is to charge in full bore like an idiot against superior numbers. If I try to use any form of ~tactics~...even on "Tactician" difficulty...the game seems to forget that I have 4 other party members and additional summons that I specifically placed to gain an advantage of that "Surprise!" mechanic.

I think it must be a bug. I'll keep fiddling.

This is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ frustrating, almost 1 year later it looks like it's still like that.

I'm spending more time reading forums than playing the game bc of ♥♥♥♥ like this

All you have to do is press the other characters picture before skipping turn with the one character that initiated combat. All of them get an attack/action and movement and then get positioned in the initiative queue

Simply answer, when combat begins, press F1/F2/F3/F4 to select the other appropriate party members. You may need to move them into the combat area depending on how far away they are, but at that point, they should roll initiative and join.
