Summoned Familiar gets stuck - wont follow between zones.

as the title says, familiars become stuck - I summoned mine in the temple and it's still there several in game days, and IRL days later. I can only dismiss it, and it won't follow me if I leave the room I summoned it in. Are familiars really incapable of following the rest of the party around the map?
