Joining Failed: Already Connected (multiplayer)
I am posting this for posterity and in hopes it might help someone else. I was trying to play with my friend and I set up BG 3 on both PC's, we are on the same network. When setting it up I inadvertently used the same profile name in BG3 for both PC's. When either of us would try to connect to a hosted game we would get the error Joining Failed: Already connected. After working with it for a while I finally figured out that for multiplayer games the profile names have to be different. Once I changed the profile names to something unique, everything started working and we are now able to play in a multiplayer game together. Hopefully this helps someone and good luck!

What do you mean by "profile names"? I have similar problem that I am trying to fix, your help would be nice

Yes, what profile name are you talking about? Where do you change it?

Currently encountering the same problem. Our profile names appear to be different. Is this just our Larian profile names, or something else?

For what its worth, yesterday you could play a lan game with one copy of the game. It appears this error was put in to force you into buying two to play on two different PCs. Currently dealing with this but no issues prior. Even bought the game on my wifes computer so two seperate steam accounts STILL wont let us play together.

Did not know that, Cidd, but we're trying this with two purchased copies. Confirming that we're on separate Steam accounts and separate Larian accounts.

Same issue I deleted everything related to game profiles/saves but still can't play with my wife from 2 different steam accounts.

For anyone else with this issue, more stuff we tried that didn't work. YMMV:

I think I have a fix. This is totally bizarre and I don't know why it worked, but...

First, do this from the Larian multiplayer issues FAQ:

"If you can not connect to anyone else, try starting the game and switch to windowed display mode and lower the game resolution. Then from the main menu click on Multiplayer, switch to the LAN tab, and create a lobby. In the Lobby Settings on the right, make sure LAN connections are enabled. Next, start another instance of the game directly from the bg3.exe or bg3_dx11.exe executable, in the '..\SteamApps\common\Baldurs Gate 3\bin' folder, then when it loads select Multiplayer, switch to the LAN tab, and try joining. With only the local networking involved and identical data, that should work."

This "works" in the sense that I now have two copies of me in my own lobby.
Incidentally, one has my Steam profile icon (the default question mark) and the other is blank.

Now, quit the lobby from the SECOND instance of the game and create a new lobby. Send a steam invite from the SECOND lobby to your friend. For us, she was able to join! Then just close down the first instance of the game.

yea, none of the work arounds have helped. I refunded my wifes copy as I am going to play eventually, and buy a controller to couch coop if needed. Hoping to try the lan work around tommorow or whenever it gets patched up. Will keep coming back to see if some other solutions occur.

Interesting as I tried on my end earlier and it did not work, will give it another shot.

Thanks.

I edited my post to be a little more clear. You have to make a new lobby in your second instance of the game.
Ciddvicious Aug 3, 2023 @ 6:29pm
yea I cant even join using LAN with my second application.

In my case, my wife and I have been trying to play on two separate PCs, with separate steam accounts, separate Larian accounts, and two purchased copies of BG3. I tried Enasni's workaround posted above and it worked but that's pretty cumbersome to do each time.

What I realized was that on both PCs we were using my same Microsoft account and all the files (perhaps most importantly our steam user data) were being saved/synced across the two PCs. My fix was that I created a separate user account on the PC for my wife and voila! works normally. Hope this helps!

My wife and I have two copies of the game. Two separate steam accounts. Today I decided to play on the pc instead of my laptop since it has cross save. When we tried to play again later we have the already joined option on her account. I’m beyond pissed about all of this. 20 hours into the campaign. Sad thing is it’s the first game she’s really been interested in, and it’s likely beyond refunding since we’ve owned it since early access. Tried all the trouble shooting mentioned above and nothing works. All of my saves are on her account now, and it’s like she doesn’t even have one anymore.
Larian needs to fix their game.

had the same issue with my bf for a couple of days and was able to fix it just now. when we were together he was playing on his laptop and i on his pc, thought that if I get to my place and install the game in my pc with different internet it would fix but nah. ended up deleting playersprofile on the bg3 launcher options and it fixed the issue for us. hope it helps for you guys! go to:
- baldurs gate launcher
- option
- open profile folder
- click player profiles
- delete all items in playerprofiles
- save changes
- relaunch the game
