Is Gale useless
Every combat encounter starts with this weird prioritization on Gale, if he doesn't get killed within the first turn cycle (Because we are never allowed to act first in a fight, always last, even if we Instigated the fight ourselves) All he is good for is casting enlarge on my main barbarian. I've literally not had a single time where Gale has changed the course of a battle or has even had a meaningful turn. Also, he keeps hitting on me. I don't want to go out with gale, but he makes me upset because he keeps saying he's going to die soon, and then asks me out, and then I have to turn him down and it gets awkward.

1) Get alert perk at level 4 for all chars to act first
2) Gale is targeted because he is a wizard, robe user and usually the weakest party memebrs, especially if the rest of your group are fighters/rogues/clerics/etc.
3) You can't get rid of him yet it will be instant game over sadly. Shouldn't have recruited him in the first place. Later you will have the option to get rid of him
4) Reject him and then when times comes starve him. After that he will be much more normal chracter.

That makes a lot of sense now, I don't know if the game at some point tells you that information about the AI's targeting priority because I'm assuming it doesn't. Maybe multi-classing him into something else like a warlock would increase his DPS? I never get to use his strongest spells because they have destructive AOE'S that'll absolutely screw over another party member. And honestly if it lets me act first, I'll probably re-spec all characters just to get alert. That seems like one of the most important traits you could pick up. None of my group has it.

Yes he is useless.
I have been waiting 400+ hours in my fight now and he STILL hasn't moved!

If he is useless, seeing as you are the one controlling him, it means you are useless with him.

If you set the difficulty to tactician, NPCs are supposed to focus your squishies, but either way learn how to make him less helpless.

Use mage armor and maybe even a shield and don't mess him up with things like armor, unless you got the proficiency and dex for it, and if you want a defensive powerhouse make him an abjuration wizard.

Or go one step further and respec him. If you want a class that's not too far off the wizard dialogues you will still be getting with him, try eldritch knight.

Gale useless? LOL. That's a good one.

I just used him to banish 6 enemies while hasted. His concentration checks are at +10 with advantage.

Tell me you don't dnd without telling me you don't dnd.

Useless? No

Glass cannon? Yeah, unless you specifically do something to avoid it (Abjuration school, for example).

Yes...... he has a power that i have clicked more than once by mistake, that skill is no longer in my hotbar.

On a serious note play gale the right way and he is a very powerful companion to have.

rebuild him with 16 dex and give him some good light armor (you can get a set free off a dead drow at wakeen rest right after druid grove) and a shield. His AC will catch up to most of the others. DO NOT CHANNEL SPELLS early game. Channeling a spell is a KICK ME target, one of the reasons the rothe form of druid can be a slick tank (the AI can't tell the diff between dancing lights and a dangerous channel spell).
If you don't channel and are not sitting there with like a 13 AC, you will get left alone. Also consider gale as a user of the missile snare gloves from the grove vendor.
Stay on the edge of cast range for your spells too. If the want to hit him, they have to come through your others and won't survive that.

He's a wizard. He can learn spells from scrolls. How can he be useless?

Also, he's not the only NPC that hits on you. Everyone's bi and horny in this game.
