You can try skipping the fight at the front by climbing up the vines and jumping on the platform to enter the tower upper floors on the left side of the tower entrance. You might need to save scum to unlock the door which has a check for 20 if I remember right. You can try going back down from the top and give the enemy a pincer attack.
edited: gnolls were the only allies who won't make through the battle, RIP Timothy, Barnabus and Tornelia.
I'm at lvl7, maybe I will go back and do the mountain pass as someone suggested to level up.
How did you get past this point ?
Oh yeah don't go into the main door. Use any jump spells and go up on side of main entrance. You can also take out smaller groups up top before the big battle down at entrance.
The joys of icestorm to make enemies fall flat as you destroy them from range. And thats on tactical.
In my current Tactical playthrough, I have Jaheira but not her Harpers as Isobel got mobbed and taken during that fight and so Last Light fell.
Now, in my 4th attempt to storm Moonrise AND keep Jaheira alive, I decided to try something a little different. Party is me as a Armorer Artificer, Karlach (Wild Magic Barbarian/Spore Druid 6/3), Shadowhart (Tempest Cleric with a Throw build), and Astarian (Shadow Monk/Assassin 6/3).
First, as soon as I got Jaheira to join me I short rested; because without her Harpers, she'd already spent her Wild Shape charges and 4th level spell slots. Then, I decided to stop just inside the doors (before triggering the dialogue with Z'rell), and snipe folks. Multi-target arrrows, thrown bombs/grenades, even a Fireball scroll. And they just stood around taking it while I killed about 1/3 of them. Initiative finally started when I got too far down the stairs trying to shoot a guy on the rafters, but it made controlling the scene (and keeping Jaheira alive) so much easier.
I'd be willing to bet this is an unexpected exploit on Larian's part, and will probably get fixed in a Hot Patch...but for now, it makes the difficult fight much easier.
