WARNING!! Breaking Yurgir's contract (spoilers)

So, this entire thing will contain spoilers.

You have been warned. SPOILERS!

If you talk to the devil Yurgir and agree to break his contract (btw as a Warlock your patron will force you to say that you wanna help him) you'll be expected to find the last person alive in there. Turns out, the rats are the last piece of the puzzle.

HOWEVER

If you've already talked to the mice and agreed to let them live, they'll disappear forever it seems. I've ran around the entire place multiple times, can't find a single trace of them, even using minor illusion to steal Yurgirs umbral gem so you get past the big door. They're not past it either. Looked at the bottom of the place at the effigy. They're not there either.

This is a huge issue because I'm 23 hours into my playthrough and suddenly a choice relatively early in the dungeon has led to me failing the quest in a way that there's no coming back from. There weren't any hints or anything that this might be the case because I talked to Yurgir waaaay after I'd talked to the mice. I didn't even have any save files within the dungeon anymore that was before I talked to the mice, I had to load a really old autosave from back in the tavern at about 21 hours in!

So yea, if you have any intention of helping Yurgir break his contract, don't let the mice fool you. I'm literally having to replay 2-3 hours because of that one choice.

If it's just a matter of how to get the gem without going through the side-quest, then just grab it with a character while invisible. He or any of the others can't see invisible. I did it with my rogue while sneaking + invisible, and he didn't do anything other than walk over to where it was.

But I did "accidentally" talk to the rats and agree to not mess with them after agreeing to break the contract. I even watched where the rat ran off too down the cliff (into a hole?). They should add their hole as a crevice that you can squeeze into and still fight them inside their nest or something.

I thought i was clever, I found the rats, next to the room with the cloaker. Since halsin was with me i spared the rats... THEN i did the entire dungeon... Now finding out I can't make a deal with this guy.. or redo how many hours..... Yeah a way to access the rats once more to "betray them" would make a ton of sense.

This quest is strange in general) Taught by bitter experience from Gaunter O'Dimm in the Witcher universe, I realized that when the imprisoned demon said "kill the Justiciars" - it means he had to kill all of them by himself. When I found the rat and found out that it was the last Justiciar - I wanted to go and tell Jurgir everything. But there was no dialog. Then I went further - I fought a Justiciar, and escaped from him to tell Jurgir about it - and again nothing! It was very frustrating.
In a game like this, with dozens, or even hundreds of choices, we can't solve a trivial puzzle.
Larian has disappointed me in that regard.

Yeah, a possible cool ending to that side-quest is could go like this: you find out the truth about the last rat, spare his life, then go back to Yurgir and negotiate with him the whereabouts of the last Justiciar in return for the gem and additional gear (increasingly hard skill checks or risk complete failure and a huge fight). Then watch the demons haggle it out as you let Yurgir get the final kill and get out of the contract....

Next time I'm just going to kill the lot at first site. I love big battles and it'll make getting through that slog much faster lol. (There's actually a prime choke point if you agro the panther while still up the broken stairs, and wait for everyone to advance towards you at the bottom of the stairs... just a AOE death trap there lol)

Also the whole interaction with the panther being in love yet the players can't persuade the panther to their side (with skill check or love potion) is a wasted opportunity too...

She can be persuaded to side with you, requires a 30 speech skill check tho. AFTER you cure the charm on her, (antidote,lesser restore work) This may require youi to eat the meat and learn its been dosed tho.

I know this is old. In the thread it is mentioned the experience will differ whether you talk to or fight him. I just confirmed as of patch 5 the experience is the same on tactician whether you talk him into killing himself or fighting him. All the loot is the same also.

Talking results in:
Astarion 1 disapproval and 1 approval.
Shadowheart 1 approval
Minthara no approval change. No dialogue.
Karlack no approval change, Some dialogue

But if you just kill him then to get the gem, then he won't show up to reinforce the end fight in the House of Hope (Act 3)...

(but again, if you just want the gem, then skip the chatter and side-quest, and invis/sneak to steak the gem right from under him, and go your peaceful way... easiest thing ever!)
