WARNING!! Breaking Yurgir's contract (spoilers)
So, this entire thing will contain spoilers.

You have been warned. SPOILERS!

If you talk to the devil Yurgir and agree to break his contract (btw as a Warlock your patron will force you to say that you wanna help him) you'll be expected to find the last person alive in there. Turns out, the rats are the last piece of the puzzle.

HOWEVER

If you've already talked to the mice and agreed to let them live, they'll disappear forever it seems. I've ran around the entire place multiple times, can't find a single trace of them, even using minor illusion to steal Yurgirs umbral gem so you get past the big door. They're not past it either. Looked at the bottom of the place at the effigy. They're not there either.

This is a huge issue because I'm 23 hours into my playthrough and suddenly a choice relatively early in the dungeon has led to me failing the quest in a way that there's no coming back from. There weren't any hints or anything that this might be the case because I talked to Yurgir waaaay after I'd talked to the mice. I didn't even have any save files within the dungeon anymore that was before I talked to the mice, I had to load a really old autosave from back in the tavern at about 21 hours in!

So yea, if you have any intention of helping Yurgir break his contract, don't let the mice fool you. I'm literally having to replay 2-3 hours because of that one choice.

For those who are in this tricky situation try to drag a gem across their location in the sneaky place and just steal it

Thanks for this. I wasted a long time not thinking about this solution!

Suddenly, I feel very stupid for not thinking of this. Thanks!

Here's what I did to maximize experience, rare loot, and preserve the choice of siding with Yurgir or Raphael:

1) Do not speak or interact with any of the rats throughout the entire dungeon. Do not kill any of them.

2) Convince Yurgir to let you look around for something that he might have missed, which requires a persuasion check.

3) From Yurgir there is a series of paths that take you to the foot of the giant statue in the area. There are bones everywhere and it has a slight green-ish color.

4) Read the note by the statue that talks about splitting up one being into many.

5) Speak with the rat nearby using an Animal Potion. Select "Attack" after all the dialogue is exhausted. As noted by other posters, if you agree to leave them alone then the quest will lock. The "hidden reward" is a bunch of vendor trash.

6) Killing this specific rat will spawn ~15 rats in the area. It's easy to cheese with Shadowheart using Spirit Guardians. They'll die as soon as they get close. You can move everyone else out of the pit and attack from range.

7) Once defeated a new entity will appear that is hostile. Shadowheart gets some unique dialogue as a follower of Shar. Kill him to get 2 pieces of rare loot - Justiciar's Scimitar (Very Rare) and Justiciar's Greatshield (Rare). Both have some fairly useful special abilities.

8) Go back to Yurgir. If you do not want to free him, then do not speak with him. Get your party set-up in the area where he was going to ambush you and attack him at range. FYI, you can steal an Infernal Metal before you aggro him. Not sure if this drops defeating him the normal way.

If you do want to help him, then initiate a conversation and Raphael will appear. This option, however, locks you out of Raphael helping Astarion with his personal quest. My understanding is that helping Yurgir has implications for Act 3 and the final battle.

A final FYI is that you get 3-4x the amount of experience via battling Yurgir and his minions than you do getting him to kill everyone and himself. Might be relevant if you're under-leveled.

Does anyone know what reward we get for killing yurgir. And if we get the pet to fight with us - does that have a special interaction after the fight?

50?? I'm not even rushing the game, I've done every single act 1 quest before moving on, talked to everyone I could find. Sure I went mostly for the main story in act 2, but after it I went around doing all the remaining side quests. I hit act 3 after about 38 hours, wouldn't consider that rushing at all. Even playing the hardest difficulty so it's not that I breeze past fights either.

Though now that you mention it, I do kinda wanna look into speedrunning the game, I see a lot of potential for weird/fun speedrunning tricks to get forward faster

Ehhhh- Side note here- It is completely possibly to convince Yurgir to kill himself along with his minions if you succeed the intial checks in dialogue. Which bypasses the rest of the quest. To any who missed it. I think you need knowledge religion or arcana. Playing through with a sorcerer was rather easy. Most of the baddies can be bypassed in this way. with high persuasion skills and charisma, as well as good choices in dialogue. Kethric- Yurgir- The brewer- The toll master or whatever it is-

If you have a save near where you started talking with Yurgir- reload and put any items with bonuses for the above mentioned skills on say shadow heart and try again? Raphael still ends up satisfied by this or so the dialogue states.

All just goes to show how something seemingly insignificant can completely change the outcome.

Yeah I was kind of mad to discover that it was their treasure. They were talking about a dark cloak and stuff like that, I was expecting some relic or something nice. I searched everything trying to discover where it was, I thought the quest was bugged until I noticed the marker on the map that led me to that pile of trash.

He gives some legendary crossbow (pink rarity), it seemed quite good I just never bothered to equip it.

Spoiler, click at your own risk (Mid Act 3 stuff):
If you kill him, he will not really die since he is on another plane, you will still likely face him again. As for the cat, the dialog is to convince him to kill it, you can convince him to kill his cat, his army and them himself. If you do that, the reunion dialog will kind of be inconsistent a little.

Edit: Oh its possible theres another path if you talk to the cat with the speech skill. I might have misunderstood that part, my bad.

Why does the party disapprove if you help him? I feel like raphael is the one to worry about...

This quest is strange in general) Taught by bitter experience from Gaunter O'Dimm in the Witcher universe, I realized that when the imprisoned demon said "kill the Justiciars" - it means he had to kill all of them by himself. When I found the rat and found out that it was the last Justiciar - I wanted to go and tell Jurgir everything. But there was no dialog. Then I went further - I fought a Justiciar, and escaped from him to tell Jurgir about it - and again nothing! It was very frustrating.
In a game like this, with dozens, or even hundreds of choices, we can't solve a trivial puzzle.
Larian has disappointed me in that regard.

If it's just a matter of how to get the gem without going through the side-quest, then just grab it with a character while invisible. He or any of the others can't see invisible. I did it with my rogue while sneaking + invisible, and he didn't do anything other than walk over to where it was.

But I did "accidentally" talk to the rats and agree to not mess with them after agreeing to break the contract. I even watched where the rat ran off too down the cliff (into a hole?). They should add their hole as a crevice that you can squeeze into and still fight them inside their nest or something.
