Apart from that complaint, start the battle from stealth and target the mephits first. You can have one character jump on top of one of the stone pillars there for height advantage during the fight.
Yeah, that problem with Astarion is really annoying. Just like I'm sure we'll actually need to feed Gale some powerful magic items when the full release comes out. But of the two only one detracts from usefulness. Astarion is my rogue for most of my playthroughs so that water crap...
There are a few approaches. The best is to take the turn at the first wicker basket you see (where you ran into Ethel) and then, jump to the landmass from there.
