But in general, I think it is unfair that the player loses the ability to customize the eye. Especially in the mirror. Why can we change the color of the natural eye, but the artificial one can't? Logic works where it shouldn't, and where it should, it doesn't.
there is nothing wrong with the buff, it's pretty fun - but it ruins the look of the character later in the game if you choose certain illithid options, where you want 2 black eyes
instead it makes you look like durance xD

I'm only asking for option to loose the eye somehow - it literally stopped my playthrough because I don't want to go down a path looking that way, so there is a big chance my playthrough ends there sadly
I don't like when they mess with appearance without a way to alter it later.
It's dnd, an eye can be replaced - you'd loose the buff of course so it wouldn't be without consequence to do so
i would accept that as an option so you customize how it looks
The other part is videogame. (Implementation of Mirror for players to adjust character appearances without requiring story reasons while still staying outside of story consequences.)
Story and videogame misalignment abounds. (Someone coined the phrase "Ludonarrative Dissonance" not too long ago, within the past couple of decades I think. Sounds smart to say it but also pretentious.)
Doesn't hurt to ask, but I wouldn't be one to hold my breath on this request. They seem to want story beats to stick while allowing players other freedoms.
If you haven't already, be sure to submit the suggestion through official channels.
I don't even trust Volo to stir the stew.
Ludonarrative Dissonance, that does seem to be a thing in games, especially in recent rpgs with re-rolling. I was however asking for a redeeming narrative solution, but yes, i suppose such an option would easily be overlooked, and easily shouted down
My experience went something like this:
Oh, i'm too curious to see Volo mess up surgery, and give me brain damage, but i can always reload! XD
*gets a permanent buff, cool, didn't really notice much of a difference in appearance
plays on a bit, begins notice the eye looking kind of weird in cutscenes - but i can live with it, it was my choice after all
gets much further into the game, my evil mage finally gets an option to follow his tadpole desire for power, the one he has been filling up his brain for throughout the adventure!
Sees the change alters his eyes to black orbs, it's perfect! he is looking truly evil now xD
*realizes after the cutscene the character reverts to look like Durance, Volo's eye has ruined the black orb eyes, cannot be altered in any way
only choice if i don't want this completely goofy silly dumb look is to turn away from the tadpole path, completely breaking the character illithid arc
Stops playing, can't decide what to do, haven't touched the game in weeks
game is too full of these 'gatcha' moments that i no longer trust the narrative choices
I know people think it's fun and like the eyes or don't care, or just say well you should have this or that, or reloaded, but nah, it's too far back, i can't enjoy my character with this, so much for cool 'consequences'
