I'm also iffy on editing origin characters.
That said, I agree that I wouldn't mind allowing for the alteration of hirelings. They're non-characters, so I'm not sure why the insistence on making them uneditable. If they had actual mini-questlines, it'd be a different story. But... they're just... well... there, lol.
Okay, so Origin characters are characters created by someone else, according to their vision of the character. I can respect that. No need to edit them. Let them be unique.
But the sock-puppet hirelings? They're definitively non-persons, so there's no need why we shouldn't be able to create them from scratch. Or if the game has only a certain amount of "slots" for followers, let us edit each slot as we please.
I'm sure we're all aware that this will lead into some people waltzing around with four naked hot ladies, but for the rest of us this would let us "role-play" several characters of our own creation in one playthrough. I have more character ideas than I have time left in my life to complete so many playthroughs.
If you don't know the trick, kill the steam client, open a local multiplayer session with 4 instances of the game running. Make them all, save, exit everything, load single player and you control all 4 now, proceed. It is steam, not larian or BG3, that prevents running the game multiple copies at once on the same box.
but i guess more than half of the team is on vacation anyway that's why we still don't have a Hot fix for patch 3 that probably broke more than it fixed...:)
Hirelings and Tav should be fully customizeable except for their backgrounds in case of Tav. I have no idea why they don't want to allow this. Hopefully it's for technical reasons and not dumb developer reasons.
Most people I know wanted it to change their character ... By the way, me too.
This right here especially when you're wearing hats that actually change the way your hair looks underneath and the end result is less that desirable. Also it's nice when you have the Ersatz Eye to be able to change your golden eye to something a little bit more similar.
Generally speaking the only valid point here is why we can't change hireling appearance. Origin characters shouldn't be changable. Other than that just another bitter post...
E.g. separate meshes for head/body/hair/beard, multiple textures for freckles/scars/makeup.
SO making hirelings editable would probably require the devs to scrap the current character models and remake them from scratch, and that would be sure to upset some people because they wouldn't look quite the same as they do now.
That's my guess anyway.
Creating your own hireling at the source would be the simplest and ideal method
