Attacking Downed Heroes Stop doing this at low level.
I just left the tutorial. First fight against intellect devourers has killed me 4 times. They even hit characters who are on the ground. This is Evil DM game play. I'm level 1 and you are trying to kill my pc. That's toxic. Stop doing this, this isn't a game mechanic the enemies need to be exploiting at level 1. This is to add dramatic tension in tough fights and to push characters to defend each other when they are down. It is not, for a bored monster to do when it can't find another target at level 1. This isn't how this game is supposed to work. Your DM isn't trying to kill you, or you need a new DM.

Perhaps your issue is thinking the intellect devourers are the "first fight." Just walk around them if you feel too weak to take them on. You don't even have to sneak; there's a very obvious path that goes around them.

If you think you're going to run into every fight you see and win, you're in for a bad time playing BG3.

It's not "evil DM" behavior; it is intelligent enemy behavior.

enemies need to do that or you can just death door tank for ever... it was athing and still kinda is a thing if you really want to do it but it got a bit better now i guess.

Yeah, I'm sure at level 1 players in general aren't going to be clever enough to door tank with a downed body. That's nonsense. Let's just use the strangest possible reason to allow stupid game mechanics. People who know how to do that are already going to be good enough to beat the level 1 enemies without getting knocked down. This literally only helps to make new players hate this game. I know I fit this category. This game feels like a toxic DM is running my D&D game. You can enjoy your stupid mechanic all you want. This isn't a good idea. This is mechanically being an evil dungeon master. I'm not playing at the table of an evil DM for 176 hours of just dialogue. I also can't get a refund now. However, I can tell the developers this is not at all in the spirit of welcoming new players to the experience. It is the opposite. 'Get Gud Scrub.' New players are going to trash this in reviews. Too hard, too slow, bad auto saves that make you play it all over again.

In Divinity 2 you can skip the entire starting area with clever tricks, however, those fights were balanced. Even in the beta test I enjoyed playing it. This is a nightmare of stupid on screen D20's and an evil DM laughing at my downed PC while he kills it. If I'm wasting my time complaining I'm sure I'm not the only one who hates this nonsense. I shouldn't have to set the game to 'easy' to get to level 2. That's bad design. You don't teach the players anything other than this game will waste your time.

Who wants to replay the beach 5 times just because your cleric failed to sneak and the auto save feature only cares if you load screens. Which, is only get to be bigger issue as the city itself is supposed to be 'one giant map' with no loads. Loads trigger auto saves nothing else. So, yeah. This game will just 'lose' hours of your game play on top of murdering the new kids in the training area. Totes a great idea. I remember in Skyrim when I had to fight Adun at the beginning and he'd kill me over and over again. Wait, wait, no. That's not a thing.

Did you play on Story Mode or something? Fort Joy is notoriously brutal and off-putting to new players. Sure, the encounters are balanced, but they are balanced for a level you are likely not, and for equipment you likely do not possess.

The area's design heavily encourages players to seek out non-combat XP, better gear, and a fully party before engaging with enemies, lest you have to waste your limited res scrolls. What a coincidence; that's exactly how BG3 wants players to play its early game.

The only exception is that BG3 starts you out with decent gear, rather than no gear, and you don't have to replace it every level to stay on-par with your enemies. You also quickly gain access to cheap, infinite resurrection. It's honestly much more forgiving than D:OS2.

Considering how similar BG3's and D:OS2's early games are, I can only assume you just exercised more patience when playing D:OS2. Take the lessons you learned in Fort Joy (gear-up, party-up, level-up), apply them to BG3, and you'll suddenly find no difficulty issue.

I'm not complaining about the game giving me cool options. I'm complaining, that at level 1. This game kicks new players in the face with sand. It attacks when you are down, doesn't auto save.

Everyone keeps circling back to 'well if you play enough it is simple.' Again, this made me not want to play the game. You can up-sell it all you want. My experience has been tainted if not flat ruined by these test games. I'm sure casual players are going to dump this for something that doesn't kill and make them reload from the start of the beach 40 minutes ago. It is really hard to 'get gud' when you uninstall because it is awful.

Unfortunately, for new players the revelation this is bad, might be 4 hours into their game-play leaving them stuck with this game if they spend any time at all in the character creation screen, the tutorial, and looting the beach. That equals, review bombs. My money is on this launching at 76% positive reviews. Casual gamer's won't click story mode, and this will make them feel betrayed and cheated. Stuck with a game that post tutorial, has sprawling maps, sans saves, and replay loops that are hours of wasted game play. One of this games big things is death traps that instant kill. You'd think they wouldn't put those 2+hours from the last auto-save map change doorway. Too bad there isn't any other way to trigger an auto-save.

This will only get worse as they release the city which supposedly has no loading screen which mean no saves. This is a story game. Do you really want to play the same bit over and over again trying to do it the same way because you didn't hit f5. I don't. Not anymore for sure.

I certainly understand the frustration of infrequent autosaves and being shown by force that you can't beat everything the second you see it, but D:OS2 had the same issues (except worse), and has been at 95% positive reviews forever. Clearly the casuals got over their deaths, learned to press F5, and either turned down the difficulty, or went after more manageable encounters.

You must have as well, or you wouldn't be peddling the narrative that notoriously brutal Fort Joy is "balanced."

There is a soft warning if you have Shadowheart that fights from that moment on the beach onward are going to be real stakes. She warns you in dialogue that it can be very deadly.

I think the encounter is deliberately meant to be a cruel slap to the reality of combat. You have to very quickly be intuitive about looking at the environment they give you. There's high ground, there's shadows to hide in, there's things to dip weapons into and some things to explode. It's a lesson on taking the established tricks from the Nautiloid and putting them all together.

It is intended to be a teaching moment, much like the very avoidable and instantly deadly encounters of Fort Joy proper in contrast to the surrounding areas.

First play through with my brother who played before I noticed an auto save go off and quickly went into sneak mode. Moving forward I saw some sort nefarious creature waiting to drop down on me from a distant ledge so I shot it with an ice blast killing it in one shot.

Found out that was an ncp and I killed her to the utter shock and amusement from said brother.

To me this will always be the first fight I encountered. :mmj_sleepy_elf:
