I agree with this fully. There are too many good RPG type games out there that fall short in this category and Dragon Age Inquisition (DAI) comes to mind right off the bat. Too many epic storytelling with factionism and racism miss the mark with having those whom never done such a thing do it, and there be nearly no reaction whatsoever.
I will give an instance or two. When I played DAI, I decided to roll a Dalish Elf female (Free spirited roaming Elves whom can use magic know as Elven Magic) with the aim of becoming a Templar. Templars (mage killers) are Human only, and serve the church (Chantry) by an ancient pact. In my game, I became the first Dalish Elven Templar, the only one whom ever had, and was there a reaction to this EPIC and societal shocking achievement? Nope, nothing. Nobody cared, it was a HUGE letdown after achieving that and it just got worse.
I decided to try breaking another societal norm by having my Qunari mage (Horned giants) become a Knight Enchanter. These rare mages received special dispensation from the Chantry to serve in battle. They summon blades from the Fade (spirit realm) and are experts in protection and defense and are basically field commanders and front line magic fighters. Knight Enchanters are typically Elven (they started the craft centuries ago) and Human. Qunari are already distrusted as they have a long history of fighting the Chantry and seizing land. So I thought, that it would be cool to do this, and when I achieved it, only one companion said anything, and that was because she too was a Knight Enchanter, it was really saddening.
So yes, I would really love to see some actual reactions from the companions, in regard to things the MC does that are either not normal practice in society or especially amazing never been done things. Even so much so as an after the battle [!] from one of the companions after you first do a wildshape change would be nice, just something that gives added value to something different happening than expected.
The only actual reaction I have seen in this game during EA, is when Zevlor told me that I was brave for walking around without trying to hide my heritage (Drow). This singular reaction gives me some hope that it might actually be something that may happen a lot more down the line.
The first time I healed myself, cast a cleric spell no one commented on light coming out of my fingertips and miracles from my god :P
That said, reactions are always fun.
Well, my post was more on a wider scale than just being a Druid, it was more along the lines of the societal norms being shattered by people doing things nobody has done before, like the bits from DAI I mentioned. I only used the Druid bit as a small reactive possibility to possibly companions that might never have seen a Druid before actually shapechange. I'm fairly certain most people expect to see my Lolthian Drow to turn into a big spider.
Ah, apologies I was actually answering the OP not your post. But reactions to the MC as you say are always interesting and make the character feel special.
I just don’t see a shape change as something to be commented on. It could be, but I wouldn’t feel like something was amiss if it weren’t.
But it wasn't just that very specific thing, it was more what War Maiden said. I'm a ride-or-die Dragon Age fan, but there were so many times when it would have been nice to have a comment on a situation that should have been shocking.
I love Baldur's Gate 3 SO MUCH, I just thought I'd add a small suggestion to make it even better - a vote for more ambient dialogue, especially relating to the PC's unexpected choices.
+1
Your suggestion is great and your input valued, thank you for it!
Makes sense. Its a good suggestion :)
