But in PnP a good DM can allow you to break certain rules if it doesn't hurt gameplay and you got a good explanation. Like your character is of an isolated village of elves, that have some humans in their ancestry or you have been cursed to bear the ugly face of a lowly human or you actually seeked out a wizard to give you the face cussion you so much desire. Maybe you even would chose a low charisma score for them, to indicate that their appearance is abnormal and therefore met with prejudice.
Smiling faces in older games often look silly but in BG they look... happy. It adds to the game for me.
Like somebody slammed their head between a book or something.
Nah, I think it's meant to be sort of skeptical or quizzical, a sort of pursed lips kind of thing. On the female adventurers I think it kind of looks cute. But I can see how the guys might feel differently.
Here's an example (don't worry no spoilers): https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2321361994
You're welcome.
Personally I think the facial animations are pretty good, especially considering it's still in EA. I like that my PC has expressions and their face isn't just blank all the time. They also seem to have figured out how to animate smiles really well. Typically in games the smiles look like grimaces to me, because they don't reach the eyes. Larian's are well above average IMHO. But the "I'm in pain" faces need work.
Larian has been putting a lot of work into the cinematics, so they are getting consistently better. By the time the game comes out in full release, I expect we'll have more variety in facial expressions. And if they can get them consistently as good as their best work so far, I'll be more than happy with the facial animation.
LOL, Dude you crack me up. :-)
And yes, I am a fan of Larian's, too. I really enjoyed both DOS and DOS2. I'm hopeful that Larian is going to really knock this one out of the park.
You want Ugly this is ugly... but the character is meant too be ugly...

I think most games do unrealistic pretty people with no faults scars or genetic traits, these small faults define a model and make a model more realistic in high render.
The system of using facial scans has created a situation where the results can be quite good for any individual, but some players won't feel satisfied that they have made the PC "their own" and others will feel annoyed that they see the same faces on NPCs and their friends' characters.
I have no problem making characters that I enjoy looking at - male or female. But when I look at images shared by other players, so many look very similar. So I can see, oh, they used the same facial preset I did. That's a bit of a let-down.
